Putting a pair of the new SLX M666 brakes on my Trance, which I use for quite technical 20/30K trails (think slow, obstacles, logs, rocks etc.), and the occasional XC Enduro (faster 50-110K race). I notice the Ice-tech rotors and finned brake pads are quite a bit more expensive than the non, and am wondering if I really need to spend the extra.
My understanding is the 'sandwich' construction of the Ice-tech rotors and fins on the brake pads are all about dissipating heat - but with my kind of riding I've never heated a brake up enough to cause fade, and unlikely ever will. Do you think I need Ice-tech?
if you havn't overheated your brakes yet, probably not.
Though my experience of the Hope Floating Rotors is that they dont bend and deform as easily and last a lot longer (still got an original)
A lot of it is marketing and playing on the desires of the consumer...going by the fact you are asking, I'd say no...they look nice and they look different to what is offered by others but that doesn't bother you...so no.

Right! And in fact my first thoughts were how difficult it would be to clean the gunk out of those little fins on the pads, so I'm obviously not fashion conscious enough 😆
No I would doubt you need them.
Had a week in Morzine on my XT's last year with standard superstar rotors and all was fine. I did have the ice tech pads though which came fitted as standard.
For UK riding I wouldn't worry...
you don't need them.
do you really need any of it?
Probably not.
do you really need any of it?
If we're getting into the philosophical realm of whether we humans need so many material possessions to make us happy - then probably not.
But if we're talking about the more earthly issue of whether I need better brakes to help me stop - then the answer is yes! 😆
my question was rhetorical 🙂
I don't need £400 new wheels for my BMX but i'm still picking them up this weekend 😉
I went for them, but then I needed new rotors anyway and I figured aluminium is lighter than steel so they're probably worth it to save some weight, I guess the cooling will probably only be an issue on annual pilgrimages to somewhere warm and sunny with big hills, although I've had minor issues with overheating in the lakes it's usualy becasue I've been comfort braking on a steep section and releasing them for a few seconds is enough to cool them.
comfort braking
Love it 😀
Last time I crashed into a tree it was a little ,uncomfortable. I could have done with a little comfort braking before I hit it... 😆
No.
By the sounds of it, if you've never overheated a brake, then no, you don't need the specific rotor or pads. If you're going to be doing repetitive 30mph to standstill braking, then yes, it'll probably help. Otherwise the power is in the brake, the friction in the pad and the rest is for heat dissipation (which I'm not doubting it does better) which you'll not use.

I was thinking of the kind of braking you end up doing mid decent because you're worried about the consequence of crashing if you get any faster, or it's a shared path with limited visibility, which tends to get things hot, as opposed to just slaming on the brakes at the last possible second before a corner kind of braking which tends not to overheat things.
Comfort braking, I like it. I'll no longer drag my brakes 'cos I'm a wuss 😉
You don't need them. There are loads of brakes out there that work perfectly well without overheating. Why spend daft amounts of money on brake pads?
comfort braking is a real term, they used it a lot* on my advanced driving course. Breaking because youre uncomfortable with your speed/line/control, not because you actually need to slow down to get around the corner. A of lack of confidence, not lack of power, grip etc.
*(at the start, not the end of the course 🙂
You don't NEED them, but surely you WANT them? Btw, the overprice finned pads don't need to be used, you can use standard XT pads from your favorite bargain internet supplier....
I have 160's on my HT - more powerful that the 203/180 Hope M4's they replaced.
Ok, thanks all!
RT76 non Ice-tec rotors and G01A non-finned pads are now on order to go with my new SLX brakes...
I'll be selling the finned pads that come with the brakes to someone who needs (or wants) them more than me!
