Do I need a goatlin...

[Closed] Do I need a goatlink? 1x10 42t cassette

Just swapped a 2015 Whyte T130 over to 1x10 with a 42t cassette. The XT mech can shift up into the big cog, but won't come back down again. The frame mech hanger is directly below, or perhaps even a little bit forward of the hub axle. On my other bike which has identical components, the mech hanger is slightly back. So do I need a goatlink, or would an alternative mech be better?

Cheers,

Presumably you've adjusted the b-screw?

Yep, wound in as far as it'll go ๐Ÿ™

Some cassettes come with a longer b- screw. Otherwise, a goatlink would likely help. I used to use one on my Production Privee.

Look on eBay for "derailleur hanger extender"

I run the same cassette ratio with a one up rad cage. It shifts flawlessly. Personally I'd go with the rad cage over the goat link as the rad cage keeps the jockey wheels closer to the cassette in the higher gears whereas the goat link just moves the entire mech lower and rearwards.

Hmm. The rad cage costs as much as a new M6000 rear mech, which ought to work with a 42t cassette. I assume the new M6000 stuff is compatible with older 10s kit.

Had a Pilo version on my old Capra with a Sunrace 42t cassette and a XT mech.

Made a big, positive, difference in shifting and mech position. Couldn't get anywhere near a pod setup with the standard link, swapped to the new link and it was spot on within 5 minutes.

Sent you a pm

What I found was, I could make it work with all standard parts but it was flighty and generally a pain in the arse- it had to be perfect. Radcage made it work like OEM with all the easy tolerance etc. Goatlink might be the same, I dunno, never used one.

Not sure how much a goatlink or rad cage are but a shimano 11 speed mech works flawlessly on a 10speed set up with 11 - 42 cassette

If you remove the bit of plastic that the B tension adjustment screw sits in, you should be able to get it working.

However I found that there was quite a high wear rate and a bit of slipping even when the chain was quite new in the smaller sprockets, so I recently reinstated the bit of plastic and fitted a goat link, which gives better chain wrap apparently, and seems to have cured the chain slip (which only happened in a flat out sprint to be fair).

If you don't already have a 10s mech, consider what ssboggy has said re. 11s mechs.

edit- you clearly already have a 10s mech.

Whats the chain capacity of your RD?

The spec should also tell you the max number of teeth for the cassette.

So what shimano mech is the shimano 11-42 10sp cassette made for? Seems odd you have to bodge it

Just about to go 11-42 ten speed and planning on fitting one of these;

https://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/shimano-deore-10-speed-rear-derailleur-rd-m6000-gs-shadow-626838

According to the specs will work perfectly with 11-42 - unless anyone has experience with suggests otherwise? If it makes any difference, going to fitted to an inbred 29er.

I've fitted that Deore M6000 to my hardtail and although I've not ridden it it does seem to work fine in the workstand with a Sunrace 11-42. There's loads of thread left on the B screw too.
