I have an old dmr sidekick frame I’m looking to rebuild for my son, it is chocolate brown, sidekick 3 I think from at least 10 years ago.
It has a bb I don’t recognise. A bit like a isis one it originally had dmr cranks. A quick revivew on the park tools website has left me more confused!
Couple of questions for the font of all knowledge, what bb is it? What tool do I need to remove and can I fit shimano bb and slx cranks?
If no one knows from the description I’ll dig it out of the loft and take photos tomorrow
Maybe it is an isis bb from crisis cranks?
Euro BMX BB possibly?
original DMR cranks had a splined BB axle much like a BMX but cups to fit a 68mm threaded BB, looked like an ISIS BB, was not a sealed cartridge but had a fixed cup and non-drive side had a lock ring like a cheapo cup and cone BB but with cartridge bearings. Came out around 2000, weighed a ton, I had some on an original Santa Cruz Bullet. I have an original DMR Sidekick, it has a 68mm threaded BB shell so should fit most modern cranks. Later ones may have had a BMX BB shell as I think some of their frames did, do some measuring of the BB shell on the frame and a bit of google

Its says 68 / 73 shell so I think you are right Dom, any idea what tool is needed to remove it?
I can't be sure from that picture but it's either a US BMX bottom bracket (which it does look too small to be) or a normal BSA threaded shell.
With that in mind it should be easy enough to measure and figure which it is. If it's BSA then either the proper tool or a hammer and sacrificial flat head screwdriver will shift it.
@d42dom are you talking about the old Chieftain cranks? I don't think that's what this is for, they were proper 3 piece.
Shona I octalink Bb tool park ref bbt18
Luckily the standards been repurposed as a lock ring for e-bike motor sprockets so tools still widely availible .
Can get no name ones on Amazon for a couple of quid which beats finding out your bb is stuck and beating on it with a hammer mangled it

But not nearly as fun. Still have great memories or hacksawing the BB shell out my General Lee. 😉
Before or after you parked it in a tra sit vAn 🙁
Umm, well after. Yeah it must have been because I'd moved into my own place when I did the BB surgery. Was still going strong when I sold it to a mate.
Miss that one. Never missed the van though.

That's the ones, they deffo did them for 68mm shells though as above. It was when the first came out, proper pain in the arse!!

You can remove the lockring with hammer and punch/screwdriver. I'm pretty sure the DMR Chieftain cranks I had were normal BB tool of the time. I would probably go at getting the cups out with pump pliers or similar, more suitable tools maybe available! Having been a bike mechanic late 90s early 2000s most new things were a pain in the arse!
