There must be a way...hang a bag of sugar from middle of spoke and it deflects by x mm = y kg tension?

*thinks aloud*

Spoke length = 290mm, tension = y

deflection x = 145mm sin D where D = angle of deflection

sin D =(approx)= x/145

y cos D = 1kg => y = 1/(cos D)

Or is this bollocks?
