Discoloured rotor - will I die?

I have tried to bed in a SRAM rotor and pads and ended up with some discolouration on the rotor visible when looking at the thin edge. Obviously it’s got hot. The question is - too hot?

I had previously tried to bed it in and it was squealing a bit so I tried to re-do it last night on a long descent. Might have overdone it but the manual says slow to a walking pace 20 times…..

Of course you'll die.

The rotor will be fine though, just stop looking at it and get on with [s] the rest of your foreshortened life. [/s] riding your bike.

what colour is it? brown is good, blue is bad, but its still fine to run it imo

It's brown (or gold as I like to call it). 🙂

Maybe I've perfected the art of alchemy....

Sod that, your door mat is not aligned with your block pavers.

Also, I'd be more concerned that your tyres appear to be showing similar discolouration on the sides.

Thats not discoloured.  I had some blue ones on the tandem.  Disc brakes get to several hundred C.

It's definitely a different colour to before I tried getting it hot. It's a bit more obvious in real life - hard to capture in the pic. It extends a bit down the arms away from the braking surface too but the braking surface is silver still. Def brown/copper/gold though, not blue.

Meant as in "thats not a knife - this is" but then I realised I had no pictures of the tandem ones which were discoloured right down the spokes 🙂

The colour discolouration can indicate how hot it got - light straw is about 220C, whilst blue is about 300C - steel melting point is 1400C so you’ve got a little bit more to go 🤓

Well, so I ride with a group a lot of the time and the general consensus there, from the organisers, is that you should have the lever facing aft at the rear in case anyone riding close behind gets their wheel caught up in it - the thinking is that it will release if they brake rather than getting "hooked". That being the case I lined the front one up with the rear. I must say I prefer them lined up with the forks BUT it begs the question, what do you then line the rear up with? Because none of the suitable bits of frame are at the same angle as the fork so we're back to having them fore and aft for continuity! You can tell I've given this some considerable thought....😂

So, ive taken the wheels off and cleaned the pads and rotors with some disc brake cleaner from the awful MucOff company and just been out for a test ride and the front still squeals like a bastard, which is the problem I was trying to cure with heat. I might swap the pads over or something. Maybe the disc is just rubbish. 🤷‍♂️

They are 160 front and rear but also SRAM. Thanks though. 🙂

They are SRAM Paceline - maybe I just need to upgrade to Centreline...whatever they are (I just know they are more expensive).

I know of someone who hacked and bodged a BB7 as a touring tandem drag brake.
Needless to say, it got so hot that it failed, everything failed. Warped disc, melted grease, burnt paint...

What's wrong with blue rotors?

So next question is how hot do they need to be to melt some of the pad material onto the disc which is I guess what SRAM are trying to achieve by telling you to brake 20 times to walking pace followed by a further 10 times after waiting for a bit - which is what I did when they were new and again last night but on a hill however they still squeal. I’ve got the “quiet” version of the SRAM pads in too and they market the rotor as quiet….
