Hi guys,
Probably a newbie question to be honest, rather embarrassed to ask! However here goes nothing.
Been out riding today and found some dirty black / grey oil rings on my Fox F90 RL's stantions. Does anyone know what the cause might be? I'm thinking contaminated seals; would I be about right?
If so, are they easy enough to replace myself? If not, who does a cheap service on Fox's? Not sure I can afford a TF tune service right now...
Cheers!
Dave
just dirty seal tops mate. Get some PTFE lube and lightly spray the stanstions. Cycle them up and down a few times, give a good wipe an repeat. Now store the bike upside down for 24 hours and away you go.
Ok, no probs. Will do that. Tell me, are fox's always fairly juicey with the amount of clean oil residue that the leave on the stantions? I seem to have quite defined rings of clean residue as well as the grey rings, thats kinda what made me think seals in the first instance.
Yep, hence why you need to get them serviced every 15 hours of riding!
Or, just keep adding a small amount of PTFE lube after every ride, spray, cycle them clean and then add another small squirt and clean.
Then every 5 rides store upside down for 24 hours to keep the inner foam seals wet.
Every 15 hours? My good dear lord... if only I'd known that before spunking my cash on eBay. Wow, thats... errr lost for words now!
Right, sorry to sound like a muppet but can you run me through a few things...
PFTE Lube - the same as GT85 spray lube or not?
"Cycle them clean" - I'm not sure I know what you mean.
Thanks for the help so far though!
Dave
GT85 is what I use. Spray the stations and leave for a few minutes. Pump the forks up and down to allow the lube to partially enter the dust seal. You will now see a nice thick rims of mud grit and crap. Clean that off and then respray and do the same. There should now be no marks being formed and then when you next use them you should get a light lube mark that you can clean off after the ride.
I do this every time I come in from a ride and have done it with all my forks.
Yeah 15 hours they say to take the lower legs off, clean, add new dust and foam seals, add 7ml or near that of oil and do back up.
Cheers dude! I think I owe you a virtual pint!
You've made my night a lot better now!

You need to mother fox forks. Treat them like a little baby.
