I think mono m4 still had the different size pistons* - the new ones are the same.

Yep, the pistons on M4's are pairs of different sizes. Little things like the bleed nipps are smaller on the newer caliper too.

Pads are interchangeable, though.

Yup, the Tech M4's have same sized pistons whereas the old ones were different sizes. If they are the same as the Tech X2 they also have phenolic pistons rather than alloy to help prevent heat transfer from the pads to the fluid. The Tech lever is soooo much better than the old Mono lever and allow for endless faffing with the adjustment
