Firstly apologies for yet another Magic Shine question but google didn't help.
Are these the same apart from the modes:

I don't want the faff of clicking through modes so the 3 mode appeals but the 5 mode is newer and therefore might have some other improvements?

The charger for the 5 mode light comes with a UK plug, whereas you will need to use a ~99p shaver adapter with the 3 mode light. Also having to cycle through 3 modes can be irratating enough at times (for me). I suspect 5 modes would be worse.

That's my fear. Night rides are usually sub 2 hrs so I can leave them on max but I want to use them for road riding too and drivers aren't going to be happy if I leave them on max all the time.

I believe the 5 mode comes with an OP reflector and the 3 mode a SMO one.

The reflector on both my 3 mode lights are textured (OP) not smooth. The description with the 3 mode light says SMO reflector but it looks OP in the pictures. You have to take the details on the DX website with a pinch of salt I'm afraid.

If the controller is anything like on the torches, then the 5-way switch always turns it on at the medium setting, and then I have to click through the low to get to high. So 1 hard click, 2 soft clicks. This has now become second nature and isn't a problem.

I heard that the 3-way can be a bit temperamental, but my mate Simon, who has ordered about 500 for his company says the 3-way are better.

Took my 3 mode out tonight for the first time, basically its high, low, flashing. Basically for the money this light is awesome. I swapped the bar clamp for a lumi can one I had and just added a couple of washers to clear the cable. Im going to put a bit of silicon sealant where the wire goes in also to keep any damp out. The battery pack is great two with a funky little electric blue light and a power meter. How can they do all this for fifty quid????

If its using a shaver adapter then its probably 110-240v input voltage. My 18650 cell charger is, so I lopped off the US plug & wired on a UK plug. The connector is the same as a std UK 2-pin power lead if you've a spare one. I never leave mine charging out of sight though, just in case.
If these are in anyway simillar to the torches then go for the 5-mode. The lower setting on the 3-mode is too low. The two lower settings on the 5-mode are just right. And flicking through them does indeed become second nature.
