Deore/SLX vs X7/X9 ...

[Closed] Deore/SLX vs X7/X9 - should I go back to Shimano?

Planning on getting a new bike soon, which comes with Deore shifters and SLX rear mech.

In my parts bin I have new X7 shifters and X9 rear mech.

I have Sram X9 on my other bikes, and like it. It works and stays working, and I know how to stop the jockey wheels seizing up.

But I also used '08 Deore for a while and was pleasantly surprised by the shifting action and performance (compared to old XT).

It's a 180mm travel bike for holidays and uplifts, so won't cover vast mileage - and wondering if this "Shadow" mech profile is a good thing to have on a big bike? Also heard they can be more of a pig to set up right.

So please let mw know what you think, especially if you've ridden both.

Haven't ridden both, but anyone who says shadow rear mechs are a pig to set up must be really bad at setting up rear mechs! Perfectly straight forwards.

Use sram myself as a few years ago when X0 / X9 came out i thought it was better than the XTR/XT i was using, things have changed though the new shadow shimano stuff is a big improvement on previous shimano mechs IMO...

I would run with it and keep what you have as spares...

Cheers guys. I think I'll stick with the Shimano, not least because it'll hopefully all be set up nice and new.

Tinsy - did you try a WTD advert?

The Hutchinson? Can't imagine there'll be much demand for it tbh. Have a punt!

the one shadow mech i've encountered had a sacrificial bit on it that went 'plink' as soon as a stick looked at it. mate couldn't get the part to replace it neither. he's gone back to regular xt.
i took an lx mech of my new bike and swapped for x7 - noticeable difference in weight, FWIW.
x7 mech, x9 shifters if you're feeling fruity, IMO.

I meant a punt on ebay Dez.

I don't like to end my auctions early, just because I find it really annoying when other people do.

I know how to stop the jockey wheels seizing up.

So whats the secret? Interested in this as I've just bashed the cable stop on my XT rear mech and it now fouls the parallelogram, meaning I've only got 7 gears instead of 9 so thinking of switching to SRAM...

Shimano is FAR nicer to work with and (imo) works/rides better.

So whats the secret?

Well, when I say stop, I really mean fix.

It's always the bottom one that jams for me - and I fix by just undoing the tiny allen key bolt, taking apart, cleaning with GT85 and a rag then popping a bit of grease in and reassembling.

You know you Sram mechs don't work with Shimano shifters though?

Yup, got SRAM on another bike

(I have four bikes with four different shifting - campy on my road bike, regular Shimano STI on my commuter, XT RapidRise on my 6" bike and SRAM X9 on my XC bike 😉 )
