I'm replacing my ancient Deore brakes with Guide RE. I can't work out how to mount the fronts.

Discs are 180mm so I've got a Shimano 180mm adapter. When I offer up the Guide caliper it fouls the adapter (which is the right way round).

1) Do I need a SRAM specific adapter?
2) Are SRAM calipers different for front and rear? I've got 2 rears as they we're cheapest way to buy.

Sram calipers are different and front and rear are different. Sometimes you can mix and match calipers and brakes but not always.

Also, what fork have you got? I fittem sram Guides to a Pike I’d bought from eBay and thought I had the right adapter for 200mm discs but they didn’t fit right. Found the standard fork mounts were for 180mm discs so I just needed a +20 not +40. I just bought cheap lifeline disc adapters from CRC and they fit. Although the RE is a different caliper to the R.

Sram spares catalogue only has one RE caliper - implies they're the same front and rear. Curiouser and curiouser.

Looks like the SRAM adapters have a pronounced bend to clear the caliper

If you have guide re calipers and are re-using the old shimano spacer you will need to put two bevelled washers under and above the caliper. The shimano adapters come with 1 to go ontop of the caliper. Ditch these and use all 4 that come with the caliper. If that doesnt work then you'll need a new adapter (sram one will have all the washers)

The calipers are the same f&r, the only thing that's different is the length of the hose that is supplied. SRAM levers can be run on either side too.

I used XTR mounts for Guide RS without issues any greater than the preceding Shimano M785 XT’s had with the same adaptors.

I’d recheck the specs. PM160 isn’t a universal starting point, and there are OE SRAM units intended for a PM170 Mount I believe as well as the more recent ‘standard standard’ PM180.

Would chucking a couple of cup spacers on old AVID style sort the problem? If so you’re probably about 5mm our for some reason...

The calipers arn't different F&R but you will find with the older style Code caliper (which is what the RE caliper is, essentially) it fould 'most' brake mounts due to the sheer size of it.

I also found it won't fit with Shimano mounts, I have a few others kicking around which it just clears though. Other option is to space out the top caliper with some washers between the caliper tab & the mount.

Just FYI both SRAM own and Hope mounts would work with your RE brakes

Thanks all - I've ordered some Avid adapters with the longer bolts
