I, for one, have been crying out for this.

Customer: "I'd like some bearings for my crown race please"

LBS: "Certainly sir. Do you have the make, mode, month and year of purchase and serial number of your frame and the same for your forks please?"

Customer: "Eh?"

LBS: "Without those I don't know which ones will work. We'll have to look it all up on the system."

Customer: "Bloody hell! I'll have to go home to find out"

LBS: "Make sure you get the right serial number, there's two, you want the eight figure one."

FFS!

Five quid says that as soon as sales of supertaper frames peaks, we get a 1.5" upper steerer standard.

Is it for the eboike brigade? Keep all that power in the frame to stop all that wattage leaking out ?🤷‍♂️🤪

I think Suntour might be over-reaching here, I know they're not know in the UK for the higher end stuff they sell in other regions, but still, they ain't Fox or RS and I can't see 'the industry' changing headtube standards on in the £500 HT bracket for them.

One company reckon a big chunky headtubes look good, but need a big chunky fork crown to go with them, and ask suntour to do it for them. Just aesthetics, and it's heavier. But's an ebike, so weight's less of an issue.

Doesn't sound like it's going to be taking over.

At least, that's what the article I read said.

In all honesty, how is that any different to buying parts for your car? You have to provide the reg number (and chassis number is better in most cases) so they can ensure you get the correct parts. And it's not like a Bosch alternator is just a Bosch alternator - just because you have one on your Ford, doesn't mean one from a Toyota will fit. And whilst you can swap wheels within the same group (usually), they don't all have the same offset or brake caliper clearance. Want to fit Volvo seats to a Mazda? Not without a lot of welding... We have a lot more cross-compatibility within the bike world than sometimes we realise.

Very true, but if you're implying that it's some sort of justification then "it's the same as something which is a complete pain in the arse" isn't much of one 🙂

To me it now just makes the fork stanchions/ sliders and hub look "weedy" now.

Oh, wait a minute....

@idiotdogbrain - which was exactly the point I was making. I know of one car manufacturer who imported a small number of a particular model that had a different engine to the official version but didn't tell the dealers about it and the system showed that it was all as per spec. That caused fun when "the engine sensor that didn't exist" would randomly fail and shut everything down. Someone I know happened to have one of these cars and had no end of problems.

I assume car manufacturers have a database that basically says: "chassis numbers X to Y have these parts", "Y to Z have this set of parts" and so on that's available to both dealerships and generic motor factors.

Nah, nothing so simple, it'll be 1.42, "giving all of the benefits of 1.5 AND 1 1/8th and bringing the trail alive"

S'not though, it's just for a specific bike brand so it doesn't look weird in their e-bike frames, It's not a a new standard.

Is it just Suntour making them? That’ll tell you if it’s a “standard” or not. Looks good though, doesn’t it?

Bicycle designers/manufacturers must be wetting their pants with laughter at people who fall for it all!

It's just a special order thing for one of their clients.

But you probably knew that anyway.

A bit like the Giant overdrive (or whatever it was called) system?

That worked well, didn't it.
