HI All
Was out for a ride on my road bike the other day and started to hear creaking noises from down near BB
When i got home i took the chainset off to check BB was ok , and it was
Then i noticed that outer face of the chainset was no longer level with the outside chain ring
After taking my chain rings off i then found that the outer skin of the crankset has started to separate away from the spider, and if you push the outside part of the crank arm away from the spider you can see it move

I've had a google and it seems to be a known issue - and i was lucky i didn't have it completely pull off which result in the pedal and outside of crank hanging off your shoe and not attached to bike....
The cranks were bought in 2014 so are out of warranty, Has any one else out there had this issue and have you been able to get Shimano to replace the faulty cranks ?
I'd say at 6 years old you won't have much look with Shimano replacing them.
Still shite though.
Same thing happened to mine after about 3 years. If you google it is a common problem with that generation of cranks

Yes, but it's luck of the draw for something that old. The dealer might get a goodwill warranty out of Madison the UK distributer if all the stars are aligned (and they are willing to spend the time).
Contact the dealer they were bought from. Be honest, ask nicely and be patient. Worth a try.
I’d had a 6800 and a 8000 ultegra crank debond, both replaced by madison.
If the dealer will send it back you’ve got a very good chance of warranty replacement, my 6800 was well out of warranty, but I have a great relationship with my LBS and they sent it back.
Email sent to where i bought it - will have to wait and see what happens
Bit rubbish they come part like this - wouldn't be much fun if you were doing 35mph down a hill and your crank arm came off along with the pedal
I've still got XTR m960 cranks on my Winter MTB and they are close to 15 years old - they just dont make stuff like they used to...
I'm still using 1986 Shimano 600 cranks, and 1989 Dura Ace 7400 cranks.
yeah they are made of cheese, been a known (and ongoing) issue on both Ultegra and Dura-ace crank sets... seen some stuff blaming road salt causing some kind of galvanic reaction but mine went and never would have been exposed to salt... they refused to replace mine 3 and a half ish years old. Went for 105 as a replacement.
It looks like the sort of thing that Shimano should have done a product recall for rather than hide behind it being just a warranty claim for those that encounter it, seeing as it has prompted the above sort of Bikeradar article to be published.
there was a hack/bodge on the GCN show where someone had used 3 ultegra left hand cranks as cupboard handles. They(GCN) seemed a little baffled as to why someone would have 3 spare left hand cranks 😀
I think we had about 3 of these plus one sheared spindle when I worked in a bike shop, all replaced under warranty. Scarily little metal in them when you see it in two halves

I'm guessing the percentage of failures is actually very low as there must be a huge number of bikes fitted with these cranks. So replacing those where failure occurs no question is a better option.
I got a spare drive side ulterga as I went power meter.

Thx for offer , but just had email from Madison asking to send crank to them for inspection via place of purchase or other madsion dealer, as a good will gesture - so things are looking hopeful for me that i might get it replaced 😎
Happened to me last year on the 8000 cranks. 12 months old, thankfully replaced under warranty. Took a while to figure out what was going on. The 2 sides had debonded but a crack had also developed at the spider. Felt like the pedal wasn't screwed in correctly.
Same thing has happened to my two and a bit year old 8000 series chainset. Currently back with Madison for their assessment, though worryingly they are currently saying they haven't received it. It was original equipment on a Fairlight bike and Madison would only accept it as a return through a bike shop. Thanks for the reminder to chase this up! I'm hoping for a replacement despite being out of warranty. I can confidently say that there has been no abuse or misuse.
