naaaaah, the 6 hour-long tv series is where its at! That was on telly over my honeymoon 10 years ago and was the first test of our marriage!

Normally I just can't watch anything subtitled... but the series was a great piece of TV.

The film is too short at 3hrs but 6hrs is pushing most to watch it so the film wins for that alone.

Great film, really well shot and brilliantly acted. I think it's quite possibly the best war film I've ever seen.

This book [url= http://worldatwar.net/review/hirschfeld/diary.html ]Hirschfield[/url] is similar, but pretty much his diaries of service on [s]one boat[/s] (mmm, actually i think one gets sunk whilst he's on leave and he goes on a second one), whereas Das Boot was an amalgam of real (but often separate) events and characters put together in one story.
If you liked Das Boot it is well worth a read.
