I'm currently running a Dura-ace7800 double 53-39 up front and want to reduce them to a 50-34. (5 bolt)

Firstly, is this a straight forward purchase of replacement rings?

Secondly, can I buy Ultegra replacements? (as skint)

Or do I need a compact HTII chainset!!

New chainset required as the bolt circle of your DA chainset will be 130 and compact are 110.

Different BCD, you'd need to buy a whole new chainset. The smallest ring you'll get on the current chainset is a 38.
It's easier to MTFU and/or change the cassette to a 12-27 or 11-28.

alek - is this for you ?

MTFU mate youll never win a 24 with an attitude like that* you are fit and strong enough to push 39:53 - just get a 27 at the back if you feel you need it.

*says terry with the aesthetic triple on his bike ......doesnt function as a triple but pisses the "poseur" roadies off

of course if this is for a cross bike ignore me !

Fancied trying a compact.......I'm a cadence rider.

It's for the Bealach ๐Ÿ˜‰

And the legs will be super powerful after the strathpuffer experience ๐Ÿ™‚ (now thats how to MTFU in my book) was out today for a first ride back on the road and coasted with ease.

Sweet feeling......(no mud/ice/snow) just black tar ๐Ÿ˜€

Edit:
OKAY.........its definitely a cassette then. Cheers for heads up. Where's a cheap 11-28 dura ace kicking about..............

dont give me that crap - jayne uses a compact for the bealach

39:25 here for me - you ridden it before? it was waaaaay overrated as a tough climb IMHO we did it back in november

I took this weekend off having ridden to work all week. let me tweaked knee subside a bit.

'that skinny waif like girly rider in the squarewheels kit that talks pure sh!t at 1am during the puffer cause he's a lite-weight' sounds a lot better to me.

C'mon man, get it right

And I seem to recall a wee change of heart at our recent event where you 'weanered' down to a 21 rear (and you call yer'sel a SS) ๐Ÿ˜‰

So.......have you decided what your spending that well earned 'puffer tokens' from last weekend?

I'm still counting the cost! Fork needs a service/drive chain goosed/rear hub gritty/BB goosed/nae pads left/and ripped MT500 3/4's. I heart 24hr racing in January ๐Ÿ˜€

alek my bike got thrown out the flat tonight because the landlord was coming round - does that tell you how much effort ive put into looking at it ?

been riding my tricross

think a hope ceramic BB is where my tokens are going and ill buy rollers from wiggle as its gonna be a pain to get rollers from steve - until its too late for me to use em ....

the beauty of ss is that despite me not lubing my chain for 24 hours and running it in the same ring for 24 hours .... neither my front or rear sprockets are showing any wear at all ! White lightening epic for the win ๐Ÿ˜€
