I'm going from a compact (50-tooth big ring) to a standard (53-tooth big ring) on my road bike, I know I might need to raise the front mech to accommodate, but will I need a longer chain?

Ta!

Depends how yours has been set up.

If you have 1.5 links to spare on big-big then you'll be OK.

how worn is the chain/cassette? you might have shifting problems if they're worn.

as long as you don't do big/big with the chain you'll probably be alright. You could always add a a link or two if it's aproblem.

You should be OK.

No problem in the 'normal' range of gears. No problem in the small front/small rear combo. Might have a problem in the big front/big rear combo, but you shouldn't really be using that anyway!

But, if you are changing chainsets, a new chain might be advisable anyway. Less from a sizing and more from a wear perspective if the chain has done a few miles.

Thanks all, both are low mileage, so wear shouldn't be an issue. I'll give it a whirl and see...

Cheers!
