I'm wanting a powerful brake for 'cross and touring but I only want a rear brake as I have a disc on the front.

So......do I go for Avid Shorty Ultimate brake at about £75 each or go for TRP CX 9.0 brakes which cost around £75 for both front and rear even though though I only need the rear and sell the spare (but who would want a non matching pair)

I'm sure the Avids will be better finished but is the power anywhere near a mini V?

Anybody used both?

Is the problem that you can't find any mini v's that aren't a pair? You could try a Pauls Mini Moto, lovely looking brake, can't vouch for the power though but I have a pair of Motolites and the quality is superb.

Not that fond of the looks of the Pauls mini moto (usually love Pauls products) due to the arms being unsymetrical plus one Pauls is the same as 2 cx9.0 which I do like the look of but don't need 2.

Love the look of the avid ultimates but are they powerful enough?

Just sent you an email regarding an Ultimate.

I ran a pair on my Addict last winter and they were pretty good, ability to switch between narrow and wide stance is pretty neat. Wide gives great mud clearance and narrow gives more power (and is better on the back for not bashing yourself when mounting/dismounting). Never felt i was wanting for power, especially with the narrow stance on the rear.

Would happily run again but new frame has disc mounts...

v10 if you're selling the front one I'm interested or the pair if the op doesn't take you up on the offer.

Got the email cheers just thinking about it.

Every review I've seen in the Avids are good but in every review says they are great compared to frogslegs which are crap. I've been mtb'ing for 15 years and remember canti's as being so so shit, and how powerful v brakes were (are) in comparison, then the world moved on to discs.

So are avid ulimates great compared to normal canti's or great when put in the same league as mini v's.
Mud clearance is not a huge concern I just want power esp when touring.

Front one ideal for me v10 as I have a crap vbrake/travel agent on the front. Email in profile if you would like to send me details.
