Cycling the Ruta Via de la Plata. Gravel or HT 29er?

I am off to cycle the Ruta Via de la Plata at the beginning of May and as I have no idea what the off road section is like, I cannot decide whether it's best suited to a gravel bike or a HT 29er.ย  ย If it's mostly fire trails, then I'll take the gravel bike, but if it's more akin to sections like those on the King Alfred's Way, then I'd prefer to take the 29er.

If you have cycled the off road section of this route, any pointers would be welcome.

Thanks

We cycled it last year on touring bikes. I can't really help with your question as we stuck almost entirely to the road - it's pretty much possible to cycle the whole way from Seville to Leon on the N630 which has very low traffic. The road route does take you on more minor roads at times. Spanish drivers were really respectful, cycling on the road was a pleasure. We stayed in cheap hotels which meant we were able to stay in some of the marvellous cities (Merida, Caceres, Zamorra, Salamanca etc)

It got to 35C near Seville last May, we had to cut some days short after my pal got heat stroke and for a few days we got underway at 6am so we could finish by (Spanish) lunchtime

Hardtail mountain bikes seem very popular with the locals. I would guess that would be the best option for you but it's very much a guess. You'll have read http://www.johnhayeswalks.com/2017/06/ruta-via-de-la-plata_20.html no doubt.

I've got a cracking road route from Leon to St Vicente de la Barquera if you're intertested.

Either would be fine, but the best would be a gravel bike. Give us a shout when you pass by Plasencia, with a bit of advance warning I'll get to get you a beer.
