Hi,

Toying with idea of custom CF drop handlebars.
Initial googling returns mainly US hits.

Do you know of anybody in UK fabricating things like stems, posts or handlebars in custom guise?

Cheers!
I.

Can I ask why? Surely the complicated shape would make it horribly complicated and expensive as a one off?

Although there was a guy on weightweenies who built his own integrated system by buying a carbon bar and stem. Then sanding off the bolt holes on the stem, ditching the face plate and applying a few wraps of carbon. Pointless and only saved 20g or so, but looked cool.

I'm great fan of wide - 500mm on hoods - drop bars with flare.
Currently using Funn G-Wide.
510mm on hoods, 625mm on drops. However The Almighty "blessed" me with rather small hands. So 130mm drop is out of my comfortable fingers reach.

Want wide, flared drop bars with ultra compact drop and short reach.

Alternative is to order one of custom made, Ti Oddity bars. But they are expensive themselves and in US. So shipment, VAT, customs and **** knows what else, so CF custom number from someone in UK probably won't be any dearer...

So that's the rationale...

Cheers!
I.

Could you find some narrow bars that suit then take them to one of the carbon frame repairers to splice a bit into the center?

That is not such a bad idea, providing I will find something suitable in department of small drop and reasonable wide flare.

Thanks for suggestion!

Does it have to be carbon?

Just wondering if you can take a normal pair of bars and with the correct knowledge, flare them? Pipe bender inserted, heat and force?

Drop an email to carbon wasp in Leeds, they might be able to help. Custom carbon is what they do.

Hi,

I was thinking about other materials, but surely you cant just heat treat aluminium, bend it and then expect it to be the same without proper curing or heat treating? Is that not all T5 or T6 about in alloy codes?

I definitely do not have knowledge and machinery to do treating, bending and re-treating I'm afraid.

Thanks tomhoward!!!

I'll give them a shout.

Cheers!
