I use a 1" chisel. Screwdrivers don't have the same contact area

Depends what headset, some have a chamfered lead-in and come off easily with a wide, sharpened screwdriver, others are designed(by complete d**ks)with a squared off edge that will only succumb to ten minutes with a series of Stanley knife blades. There is a special tool for the job, but even they will struggle if they can't get a purchase under the edge.

+++1 for split ring, making my solid ring into split ring with hacksaw. If a Mg crown be very careful with any meatl levers near it. LBS uses a clamp around crown race and then gently taps away at clamp

Use the proper tool and it's a 30 second job.

So can you just hacksaw your standard crown race and it'll still work ok?

I've done that to a few without any problem. I usually don't complete the cut but they still slip on and off ok.
