Has anybody done this? We'll prob be in Transylvania the most. We'll need to hire bikes over there. Any thoughts?

One of my daughters lives in Bucharest and we've been out to visit a few times, Transylvania is well worth a visit, it's like going back in time (people riding around on horse and cart). It's pretty cheap out there but I'm not sure that credit cards are as widely accepted.

Do NOT assume you can use your card (debit or credit) anything like the same extent as you can in the UK cos you'll have a hell of a shock! Romania is still a very cash-heavy country (and one of the largest black markets in Europe I might add) with an average annual income c Eur 7k...

You can use your credit card at supermarkets, gas stations, hotels.
Also, try asking on the local forums (I am from a different area and I really don't know much about touring anyway):

Toured a bit in Romania last summer on our way down the Danube. Transylvania looks great (if hilly), would love to visit the Carpathians sometime. Staying in hotels is not expensive by Western European standards so camping just isn't worth it. (Bulgaria is even cheaper mind). The Danube area is very rural, it's the people and the way of life that are interesting. We took our own bikes so I can't help with hire - it's always a bit of a gamble how the baggage handlers treat your bike but we've never had anything terminal happen.

I'm in Iasi at the moment and only main places not accepting cards is taxi... Ooh, don't mistake what currency they use, it's certainly not euros.... I blame the hotel..
