Are there any alternatives to these? @ £9 a pop they seem a bit steep although a %10 discount at Halfords brings them down a bit, but still...

They are pretty good, make sure you bend them a little if your shoe sole curves... The only issue is the pedal hooking up between the shoe saver and the sole...makes clipping in a faff.

How hard to make a DIY version? Get a sheet of metal and drill a couple of holes in it?

I've just ordered a sheet of stainless steel. They do look simple to make don't they, and at £3 for a small sheet that should be enough for a couple of pairs of shoes, maybe more.
