One of our group has a grandson staying with her over the holidays. He's really keen to get out riding and equally a few of us are happy to take the time and help him. He's eleven and only has a BMX of his own and last few days has been riding ( very well, I might add, no fear etc) fire road and trails with us. Using a small hard tail.He struggles on the climbs as expected, though, because of his age and strength in part.
What concerns me most is this...His bmx has 170mm cranks and so does the small Trek 4300 he's using. I'm certain that with an inside leg measurement of 24" this is potentially a big problem , particularly when trying to haul himself up 1/2 mile long climbs, even if not overly steep on fire road. Not just because it's hard work generally, but I'm bothered it may cause longer term issues especially with his knees over bending.
Any suggestions or confirmation of my fears , or ideas to help, please ?
