Hello,

When shifting to low gears, 18t and below on the cassette my drivetrain makes a proper crunchy clacking noise.... any ideas what it could be?

The chain and cassette are relatively new together, I've been running two chains and changing after a period to extend cassette life. The only thing i didn't change was the middle ring, and I managed to round off a torx bolt for the granny ring when changing it. Although the middle ring still looks fine, no spikeyness....

Any help?

Cheers

Ricks

does it happen in all chain rings or just one?
does the noise happen during the change or continue after?

Happens while pedalling, after shifting down. In the big and middle ring, I've not tried granny as I don't use extreme gears.

Cheers

so if it is a continuous noise then it sounds like it might be your chain rubbing on the cage of the front mech, as the chain moves down it will get closer to a straight line and nearer the mech cage

It's not the chain on the front mech, it's coming from
the cassette. It's more a cracking noise than a rubbing noise, my initial
thought is that the middle chain ring is slightly worn causing the chain the wear unevenly to the cassette. And as the smaller sprockets are steel they won't wear down as quick
as the larger sprockets to match the chain.

Is there logic to that? If so I'd need a new chainring cassette and chain....

have you checked that the lock ring is tight on the cassette. I've had this before and the movement it allows made a bit of a noise?

i love posts like this because i have said so many times, i have exactly the same problem and had it for months now, i bought 3 new chain rings for the front and a new casette and chain and it still makes the cracking noise, it only happens when your in about 6th gear on the back when u apply pressure to the pedals, u can feel the cracking noise as well as hear it, its definatly something from the bottom of the bike, so rickon if you solve it pls let me know as id love to get rid of it, its embarrasing when all the people in the street know your coming because they can hear the noise of a shitty bike coming when its not lol

Seven - you're right.

I did have the same issue with the lockring coming loose, but the result was very different - a clunking when putting down a lot of torque.

I really should have checked the lockring way before thinking of posting on STW, but my thanks to Seven. 🙂

Could it be that the lower down the cassette you are, then the more force is applied to the freehub body - ie effectively trying to pull it out of 'square' with the hub? Maybe service the freehub and check that the pawls, springs, bearings etc are all ok inside, or that there's no muck ingress fouling the free running under load?

For me, it will be that the alu freehub body has worn where the larger sprockets, attached to the spider have dug into the body. This allows the larger sprockets to move out of alignment from the smaller sprockets, casuing the lockring to come undone. I believe a bit of filing is in need of doing.
