Just musing about converting an exisiting frame: how much do people think it would cost to put rear facing dropouts onto a steel frame? Would it be more expensive on an alloy frame?
Let me know if you have done similar, etc.
Hi Johnny,
The likes of Argos will charge around £100 to fit horizontal drops.
I believe that steel is easier to work with than aluminium.
Would you need a disc mount - if so add on another £50ish.
By the time you have had a frame modified and re painted (either professionally or rattlcan) you are nearing the cost of a new Inbred etc.
Also bear in mind that a single speed needs a stiffer chainstay.
If you are converting a "classic" they often had quite flexy stays - not a disadvantage with a derailleur, and makes for a pleasant ride.
In the "old days" this is why it was better to run single speed with a fixed wheel than a freewheel. The chainstay flex meant that the wheel rim would rub on the brakes when under stress, like climbing hills, and being fixed meant you could dispense with the rear brake. I used to rub the tyre against the inside of the chainstay on some old bikes.
In short, if you're on a budget, get a Pompino frame for the road or an Inbred for offroad- much better than almost all the old classics.
