Why do I need one?

I dont need one at all. Ive got a OO Ti 29er and its ace. Ive also got (access to) a steel 29er Inbred (which I stuck a springy fork & gears on for my lad). Ive also got a fine Salsa Las Cruces that sees little use.

Why do I want one?

Cos I like the look of them. First off, that blue colour is just ace. I also like the slim steel tubes.

I cant afford a whole bikes worth of new bits so Id have to swap em over every time I wanted to ride the other.

Please convince me to steer well clear.

The stand-over is pretty damn high, im 6ft4 with an XL and i catch my privates on the top tube (and top mounted cable guide) if i jump off a bit quick. Also, for the height it dosnt seem very long, infact measuring my Large Yeti ASR that comes up 1/2" longer! so not sure where the 25" toptube measurement comes from.

They are very very nice tho :0)

im still deciding whether to go with a squishy fork, or the Niner carbon fork, which then will lead to the question of which colour......... 😀

the rigid steel fork is very good, ive ridden good carbon road forks before so i know how good they can feel but even still id struggle to convince myself a Niner fork is worth it for a heavy steel frame (prob worth it if you went for the Ti frame tho). The only reason ive got the manitous is because they were dirt cheap and i wanted some sus for trail centre thrashing, i will be going back to rigid for local rides.

Dont buy one, because if you ever need to sell it, you'll seriously regret it and feel gutted every time someone starts one of these threads.....not that i have any issues like that 😉

why not put a Niner fork on a swift? its not that heavy, sub 5lbs for a medium, it will make the bike lighter, faster and nimbler than the steel fork, and i can get them cheap(er), Sam specced a light set of wheels and a Niner on Steve's Swift for racing, and it came up around 20 lbs, which is what i will be mainly using the swift for.......

I suppose so but the price of the niner fork puts me off, id rather save a bit longer and get a Fox, that really would make you faster.

its not that heavy, sub 5lbs for a medium,

I have a Swift and I seriously doubt that it is sub 5 lbs for a medium. Without the EBB in place, just the bare frame maybe. Would be interested to find out for definite actually as I'm considering swapping mine for an On-One Ti29er to save a bit of weight.

STATO, how are those Manitou forks? Any good? Thinking of getting some. How do they hold up in the mud and grit?

Martin, just buy one - saw several at Kirroughtree - 3rd guy back from 1st lap was on one and they had their own "temple" (ok tent) near the transition. A thing of beauty. All they need is gears....

i wouldnt get a fox fork. if i was going a squishy fork, would be a 2009/10 reba, XX if i had the money!

Sam says the Large is 5lbs with the EBB, so a medium is going to be lighter.

STATO, how are those Manitou forks?

Well ive only used them for one weekend and got mixed results.

1. First off they are woefully underdamped from stock, but this is well documented over on MTBR, a change to heavier oil will sort this out (but i didnt have time before i fitted them).
2. Second, at 120mm they are really quite flexy, not as bad as say original Sid's but still not stiff. Running with a bit more sag stiffened them up a lot in the corners, this leads me to point 3...
3. Not sure if this is due to the light oil in them but they do move around a LOT, aint no pedal platform in these! im sort of used to this as ive used manitou for years but it can catch you out off rolling drops etc. however...
4. They really are very smooth! the reason i like manitou is the damping system has always been very good, as good if not better than Fox.
5. Lockout on top of fork got a lot of use, was easy to hand and worked well (need to on a singlespeed with forks set very soft), blowing off when i forgot to disenage it on the downs.

Overall im pleased, they are smooth, very light for the travel, adjustable and have a lockout. The bad points are easilly fixed and dont bother me as i knew about them when i bought it. Im planning on stripping them down over winter to shorten them down to 90mm and put some heavier oil in, should be perfect then :0)

Rich.

Really? I am genuinely surprised by that. I was thinking more along the lines of 6 lbs. I thought the EBB weighed around 300 g (2/3rds lb) on its own. If that is the case then the frame alone weighs just over 4 lbs which seems pretty light for Large 29er steel frame i.e. it's not much more than a Ti one

My XL was a bit over 5lb with EBB but i forgot to write down exactly how much. I think it was around 7.5 lb with fork, ebb and seat-clamp.

Thanks Rich. I am thinking of 2010 pair with a 20 mm through axle - according to the internet (which is always right) in 20 mm version they are stiffer than a Reba or Fox with through axles. I also read that the Absolute damping has been tweaked for 2010 forks but I might not have a problem with a lighter weight of oil as I only weigh 67 kg. The main thing is that they aren't a 'must have' brand and the price seems to reflect that. Would love some Reba XXs but the price is insane.

These are a very good deal, bit heavier then Minutes but 20mm axle.

Thanks STATO. Agreed it is a good deal but I'm a bit of a tart and after some white forks really. Have some black QR Rebas at the moment and have always though white forks would look better. Sad but true.

Might have to rethink my On-One Ti29er plan as I had thought that it would save me a big chunk of weight but it sounds like that is perhaps not the case. The £800 special offer price is very tempting though!

Yay thats my Swift in pic2, cheers Stato it saves me posting it 😀

Willsimmons - I've posted some feed back on your Minute 29er thread as well but most of it just reflects what Stato has said above.

Oh and to the OP - JUST DO IT 😉

Bit of info:
the Singular fork weighs 1180gms uncut on my scales
On-One Carbon 29er is 912gms on my scales
the Niner fork claims 550gms.

Unless you are a heroic downhiller you don't really need a suspension fork on the SIngular which means you have lots of loot to spend on nice light wheels and crankset 🙂

ummm, no

talk to me bonzo, I have a well equipped parts bin, if it takes some cheap bits to make you see the light I'll do what I can.

Some nice examples above, some of which I've not seen before.

Thanks everyone for talking me out of getting one 🙄

Yeah, cynic-al youre right. Bugger me I cant even be arsed to change pedals from one bike to another to save buying another set.

Two things are certain whatever I do. Its gonna keep its steel fork, and its never gonna have gears.

I like mine but if you have the OO then why change other than for changes sake? Mine rides beautifully but feels less nimble compared to the OO Ti that I tried, but is comfier, cheaper and looks better. So far haven't felt the need for suspension given the terrain singlespeeds make sense for.

Weight is 7lbs and small change for large frame and fork.

too many bikes that are all the same.

what?

(if i seem a bit grumpy, i'm blaming my SAD, i'm off out for a ride in a bit, that should sort me out)

The only reson you may not want to buy a Swift is that all your other bikes will become expensive clothes horses when you decide which bike to take out

Singular fleet
Medium Swift
Medium Gryphon
Medium Pegasus
Small Swift for the wife too

Decisions decisions

saw several at Kirroughtree - 3rd guy back from 1st lap was on one

He was on a proto Pegasus at the time actually, with a dodgy tensioner which allowed the chain to derail on the final descent otherwise he would have held on to the first he was in at the time 🙂

Small Swift for the wife too

More of a custom x small Gryphon in 853 pro tubing Jase 😉
