... it came to fitting the last bit.
Took one look outside today, and thought sod that I'll hide in the shed and build up my new commuter (Van Dessel WTF).
Got the road BB7s fettled; worked out how to get cables into the 105 STIs (what a faff compared to my trusty Gripshifts). Coming on well, got the shifting indexed and everything working nicely with just the mudguards to fit.
Rear SKS Chromoplast was OK even though the metal clip for the stay bridge won't fit (the bridge is way too high and the bolt hole 90 degrees out).
Onto the last bit - front mudguard ... 20 minutes of swearing later, and there's no way I can see to get the bracket mounted to the forks with the disk caliper in place.
Anyone got any clues how to get round it?
Bend the mudguard stay
You'll have to bend the stays to loop round the caliper. Relatively easy to do.
Oh, and for the rear brace to the seatstay bridge that is tapped 90 degrees to how you want it for using the metal clip, you want to drill a hole in the guard at the right point and put a bolt straight up and through into the bridge. You might need some sort of spacer to get the guard to the right height but it is actually a much better fixing than the crappy metal clip thing anyway and won't rattle.
Looks like a lot of bending? Any piccies of a successful version like that - I have a rare capacity to break stuff when trying to improvise.
Thanks for the tip, matthew_h. I'll give that a whirl.
I had the same issue with my Boardman CX - needed to bend the stay to prevent rubbing but works fine now. See below pic (sorry for quality, just popped out to conservatory with my phone):
