I'm currently trying to work out a safer commuting route from Baildon to Harrogate avoiding the busy A658 (Otley to Harrogate) and super fast B6161 (Otley to Beckwithshaw)

I can make a quieter route but would need to use this highlighted on the map. On some maps its shown as a road, but it certainly isn't!

Erm - as far as I know, yes. There's a loose form of permission over that way that covers the woods.

Yes, FC or farm track. if FC then it's fine by them, otherwise just claim you thought it was FC or knock on the farmers door and sweet talk him.

OK I think I will go for a look on the mountain bike some time and see if the track will be doable on my road bike, or whether its an excuse to finally get a cross bike!

This is the other end of it...the car park is FC, but the gate was closed when I drove passed today.

I,ve ridden that a few times and never had a problem. I think it's part of the FC stuff so is accessible to bikes.

Absolutely fine to ride it though I cacked myself once haring along there at dusk when some bloke came out of the bushes in front of me with a rifle. I'd forgotten the shooting club. You could ride it with a road bike but it wouldn't be massively fun and I'd have thought you'd get through tyres, it's a gravelly hardpack surface. Don't be tempted to carry on straight ahead to the gas offlake, that's grim on a mountain bike.

Personally I'd just head round the backroads via almscliff, north rigton and burn bridge but then I've not done them at rush hour.

ah, i thought you were suggesting using some of the farm access tracks. In that case, FC are 100% happy with cycling in/thru that forest.

I've checked out all the different routes over the last couple of days, and its certainly surprised me which is the shortest route A-B (relliant on Endomondo GPS being at all accurate)

Using the back roads through North Rigton etc came out at 22 mile, the direct route on the main road was 18 1/2. Odly the route going over the top using the above route was only 18 1/2 too, and a much nicer ride, in fact positevely wilderness in comparison, just a bit more of climbing.

Need to find myself a nice second hand cross bike now ๐Ÿ˜€
