I notice merlin cycles are doing these really cheap at the moment and i'm very tempted. Do they ride similar to a Meta 5 ? obviously with less travel. It will be used for pure xc/trails with the aspect of maybe raced rather badly.

Apparently (according to the mags etc) the 4's are a touch on the porky side for pure XC and/or racing, but they all seemed to like them with that aside for general trail use. There's a review of one on Bike Radar:

Thought it was the Super 4 on Merlin? They're lighter than the old Meta 4 and the Meta 5

I havent ridden the Meta 5, so I cannot offer an opinion on that. I do own a Meta 4x as my only bike, for riding after work, weekends and visits to Afan, etc. Its a little porky, but not excessively so, and feels really agile over rooty bumpy ground. Loving mine ๐Ÿ™‚

Ive got an XL 07 meta 4 and I really rate it. Good climbing bike and I find it very good for steep technical climbing, it just seems to dig in and get lots of traction.. Never have to touch the rear shock it just seems to work as set.

Only grumble would be the rear end is quite flexy ut you only feel it on fast sooth descents. I have put longer forks on it for descents, which knackers any warranty but the bike handles well.

I've got an '07 Meta 4 VIP and love it to bits. Not sure about the newer ones, as I've never ridden on, but the old version is a good 'un.

love my Meta 4,true, it is a bit on the heavy side, but it climbs as well as id descends.
Super 4's seem to be a lot lighter
