Does one exist?
longer rides always seem to leave me raw, new shorts/old shorts/cheap shorts/steep shorts/(no shorts?), doesnt matter. Maybe cyclings supposed to make your arse hurt even when the rest doesnt just to make you realise your human?
I find that what with riding 5 days a week, my arse misses the saddle so much, it hugs it everytime a sit on it and I never get sore. How often do you ride?
It's very personal as they need to "fit".
I find skinny ones with less padding to be more comfortable which is a bit counter intuitive.
The most comfortably saddle I have is a beaten up diamond back thing that I've got on my hack bike. It's well broken in. I've also got on well with sella italia and specialised BG but not WTB ones.
Fizik Gobi for me
SDG Bel Air
Charge Spoon does me on 40-50 mile rides. As mentioned it is all relative tho, as what works for one will not necessarily work for another.
You need a leather sofa - Brooks B17 or Professional. Takes a little breaking in but can't beat one once it's 'moulded' to your posterior...
No one suggested one of these yet...
(That's irony, viewers ;-))
Woffle: my mate Andy walked with a distinct mince for about 6 weeks as he bedded in his B17 hehe
(he does still use it 2 years later though so possibly worth it)
A good covering of chamois creme should keep the luv spuds happier
My bum seems to like old fashioned styles of saddles, none of these grooves or strange shaped back and front. WTB SST, Ritchey Vector, standard roadie/flite shapes and a big old B17 on the tourer. Most new bikes you see these days have all sorts of shapes going on on the saddle, like WTB Pure V and SDG belair, maybe you have an old skool arse.
bassspine - nice one, thats not a bike seat its a bike SOFA!!! all I would need is a TV on the bars and a coffee table, superb!
Seriously though I ride a few times during the week (fit in around my running so typically not 2 days in a row), usually a couple of hours after work (usually 20-35 miles) and do a long weekend ride, 50+ miles. Its the long weekend ride that usually gets me. I think its just a matter of trying a few saddles out, originally my bike had a scott saddle, now a selle san marco SKN, I'm thinking about trying something like a toupe or phenom, I know I wouldnt get on with a charge spoon because the location of the stitching is typically where the rawness is (although I shouldnt feel it through my shorts I dont want to take a chance, unless someone has a Spoon they want rid of for a rediculous price and I'll chance it?).
I usually stick a bit of vaseline or savlon on the area before riding and a few dabs of savlon after. I am expecting the typical MTFU response shortly but I want my ass to be comfortable even if the rest of me is being pushed to the limit.
Last year i really upped the amount i road and i too got a sore arse. It was instantly solved by using cream before and after a ride. Udderly smooth does wonders: http://www.uddercream.com/
I tried all sorts of saddles over the years and all got uncomfortable after a short while. WTB ones are the worst, couldn't even ride one up the road on a quick test spin without wincing. I bought a cow-skin pattern BelAir six years ago after reading a lot of positive things on here, and that did the trick, then, around two-three years ago got one of the BelAir FX I-Beam saddles. Now got them on all three of my mountain bikes. Best saddle I've ever ridden on, no question.
Another vote for a SDG Bel Air. The best saddle i ever owned was a WTB SST98 but they are sadly no longer available. After trying lots to replace it tried the SDG and have been really comfy ever since
