This will be a much better system... proper integration with Strava that will give you a live leaderboard and doesn't involve messing about with downloads, etc.

I wonder if this means Garmin will be giving up with their own Segments (or even Garmin Connect) and moving in the direction of total integration with Strava. Would make a lot of sense IMO.

DC rainmaker review states the Strava functionality will be coming to the 510, 810 and 1000 with firmware upgrade later in the year.

As someone who gets sucked into Strava leaderboards sometimes, but who's also been through the flood of trophies, achievements, badges etc. in videogames and then seen them turn into a parasitic sub-industry furiously grafting them onto anything and everything to "drive user engagement": UGH

Seeing data after the ride feels okay. CBA to think of anything other than riding while I'm doing it though.

Ahem; I think you will find that you are now 122nd as I beat your time by .00000000127 of a second 😆

If it can hold all the segments that'd be great. The gniza thing is good, but you have to manually choose your segments. I'd probably try a bit harder if I knew where segments were, rather than just ones I've chosen to download.

I'm certainly intrigued, looking forward to the update on the 1000.

Problem with this is that Garmin software is flaky to start with and seems to get worse every time they do a 'firmware upgrade'.

As a side note - the Edge 520 unit itself looks awesome. I have no interest in the 1000 at all - way too big (plus the shonky software put me off!) This looks perfect though - smaller than the 500/510 but a nice hi-res screen and mapping (no routing but then I never use that on my 800 anyway).

I was planning on getting a garmin and HR monitor later this year and think this would be really useful. I have a few segments I use as sprint interval or hill climb training but obviously can only analyse how well I've done after the session. having this would make training more useful i reckon

Interesting that the promo shot's have it showing the "KOM" screen only I'd be more interested in "real time monitoring" my performance against PR's for a given section/route, plus some of the other features sound interesting

The Edge 520 provides new advanced performance and power analysis to maximise training efforts. Advanced metrics include time in zone, functional threshold power and watts/kg tracking, cycling-specific VO2 max estimate, a recovery advisor and cycling dynamics – revolutionary metrics that provide feedback to cyclists on their position and pedal form.

I think the Strava tie in is more to attract the New golfers, but the other features that might actually help you during a training ride with managing HR zones, power output, and even maybe offer feedback on the way you are pedalling and sitting on the bike? that to me sounds more interesting and useful especially if it can reference previous performance and even offer input for recovery... it's all about he "Data Rich cycling experience" now innit... 🙄

A lot of promises but would you really want to be an initial release guinea pig?

The new-to-Strava badge collectors will get bored with their toy after a few months, take up wake-boarding or something and you'll be able to pick them up cheaper on eBay by next Christmas I reckon, plus the Firmware might be sorted by then too...

Ohh, I like that, looks a lot more user friendly compared to my 800.

Would make those conversations about "you know that trail, the one to the left of the one with the transit axle at the entrance with the jumps?" a bit simpler if it flashed up on screen as you approached the segments.

but the other features that might actually help you during a training ride with managing HR zones, power output, and even maybe offer feedback on the way you are pedalling and sitting on the bike? that to me sounds more interesting and useful especially if it can reference previous performance and even offer input for recovery...

You need 2 things,

1) realistic expectations, how on earth do you expect a £200 cycling computer to tell you how to adjust your saddle position, or offer feedback on your pedal stroke, that's the kind of ouput you get on a £3k Wattbike.
2) a sticker with "pedal harder faty" on your bars for the rest.

How are you meant to go faster by constantly looking at a small screen on your handlebar..?

You might assume so but if an updated model included the new features from the upcoming 520 it would basically make the newish 1000 obsolete - so perhaps not.

From the DC Rainmaker review the 520 sounds like it'll make an ideal replacement for my 800 - the only feature it will lose will be routing (which I never use anyway).

they should colaborate with oakley and make a HUD strava display.... and if it sees a cyclist in the distance it could lock on target like and guide you too them.....

can you imagine the carnage at the[s] fake races [/s] sportives.

This just feels like they're answering a question very few people asked or are struggling to make meaningful advances in their lineup so have gone for a gimmick to part people with their cash.

I'd rather they sorted out their flaky software as every new release at present just seems to make things worse, I'm fed up with it failing to sync most of the time and then taking forever when it does.
It used to be so much more reliable and quicker - maybe we need a digital strava segment for their sync times and see if the 520 inspires them to go for the digital KOM.

Could they show a little 'ghost cyclist' to represent your previous personal best like in Mario Cart? 8)

Will the next Garmin be able to project a ghost image of the rider ahead of/behind you?
Although - in Mario Kart this always threw me off and I'd be in the lava in no time.

(edit - can't believe I've been beaten to that joke - especially by someone calling it 'cart')

Pretty certain my 800 used to show a ghost image when following an activity so should be possible. Ive used segments on the 1000 to know when they start / finish. I use it for longer ones to encourage sustained efforts

Well yeah, the obvious advance they could make would be to release something more affordable but that's not how it works is it, companies like to generate new/shiny/expensive toys so the old stuff looks more affordable, the 520 will probably help shift more 510's by making it look more reasonably priced and reliable.

Don't worry, I'm unlikely to own one, let alone expect it to adjust my bike for me, but I can see a computer being able to critique your pedalling style: if you've got speed, elevation, cadence, HR, power output (maybe?) and even Di2 integration telling it gear selection, Some clever data crunching and it might be able to figure out if you're mashing at the pedals like a goon or spinning smooth circles... perhaps.

It's more the other stuff that might be useful, if it lets you know if you are currently destroying your self for no real gain, that said your body tends to give a few indicators of that too.

TBH this has got me going the other way, looking at plain old simple computers so I can just have Speed/Avg speed, Trip distance and maybe cadence summarised on my bars and the phone in my back pocket logging the miles for upload to [s]pretendracing.com[/s] Strava...

That's exactly what it does, but you need the Vector power meter to do any of the cycling dynamics stuff. It will then tell you where on the pedal you're applying your weight and what not - so you can tweak cleats.
