[Closed] Cold this morning - are long sleeve tops permissible yet?

Bit of a nip in the air this morning (~2°C).

Are we sufficiently close to winter now that I can consider a long-sleeve top and full-finger gloves?

Or should I just think of Schackleton and MTFU?

(Obviously I'll be staying in shorts regardless)

I put a long sleeved base layer on as it was a bit nippy alright. However.. you're right about the shorts. Anything other than shorts are only acceptable if you're a big, wet, shandy-drinking southern girlchild 😉

How dare you, I'm a big, wet, shandy-drinking MIDLANDS girlchild, actually. 😛

Don't you find they get snagged on your handbag?

Handbag optional.

Yesterday was brilliant - short sleeves and shorts up at Cannock. Different kettle of fish today, wet and crappy, so the thermalites are going on.

I was thinking I need to dig the buff out this morning.

Been wearing a Buff bandana-style since summer.
Keeps sweat out the eyes in the heat, keeps away ice-cream headache in the cold.

And my daughter gets to call me "Pirate Daddy". 😀

My neighbours were spraying de-icer at 7am so i reckon it's probably cold enough now to wear what you are happy and warm in.

i wear a buff all year round - even with a full head of hair .... wicks sweat better from my forehead than my hair and stops it running down to my eyes ....

good for dunking in streams and keeping cool too 😀

everyone always comments on how i must be too hot (while wiping sweat off their own face)

The STW commuter rule book clearly state that vest and pants is all that is allowed for the daily commute until 6" of snow has been on the ground for more than 6 weeks continuously.

Wear what you want and what you have. I'm lucky I can afford the choice, most of the kids in our group only have one set of "kit" and just get on with it.

I ride a Carbon FS, but the lad who rides my old Trek HT I built for him for £300 is still faster than me, even with his bright orange surfer shorts and tennis trainers full of holes!!

On Saturdays SDW I wore L/S jersey with 3/4 Roubaix's and it was a bit hot TBH, yesterdays local ride I wore the 3/4's and a short sleeve.. This morning I jumped on the Train, biblical rain deluge again here on the coast.

If it keeps you warm and a teeny bit dry, wear what you like.

As I work shifts, I commute one way in the middle of the day and the other way in middle of the night, meaning I get the best of the hot and worst of the cold weather.
I've been wearing long sleeves one way for a couple of weeks now.

Yesterday....shorts, knee warmers, base layer, roubaix shirt (short sleeve), arm warmers and very thin gilet, long fingered gloves and liners, for a 60 mile road ride. Actually, I needed windscreen wipers and a demist function on my glasses, couldn't see a thing in the fog. It was just about right though I was starting to cool down a lot as the ride came towards the end.

Long sleeves from October

Graham you will be giving it away that you are not a true Geordie by the simple act of wearing of any top so wear whatever you want as they already think you are soft.

I wear full-fingered gloves all year round and a long sleeved base layer most of the year (unless it's really hot!)

By way of contrast there is a guy I usually pass going the other way along the (off road) commute who is usually bare-chested in the summer. He was as well today! 😆

Proper Southern softie here, Altura jacket, HH Long sleef lifa and long sleeve jersey, also Roubaix 3/4 tights, winter gloves and Northface boots at 6am this morning. 2 Scottish blokes I work with never wear anything other than T Shirt and shorts no matter what the weather.

I'm careful to only wear a jacket if the police are issuing travel warnings.

Disappointed face:

Mine's not single use it can be washed, dried and worn again, amaizing what they can do these days...

TBH I wasn't aware that we weren't allowed to wear kit appropriate to the weather yet, Machismo/"the rules" have alot to answer for...

I saw some spoon this morning on a fixie wearing black with a Grey Rucksack cover (Where do you even find a Non-Hi-Viz one of those?) without any lights, RLJing his way down the A4... But he was wearing castelli shorts so must be compliant with "The Rules" so it was all OK...

Was so cold here this morning that I broke the British Shorts Time rule and actually had covered legs for once. Forgot my gloves though which was a pain.

On the other hand, speedos and a swim hat are still the required gear for Thursday morning swim time. Half an hour in the Derwent was pretty chilly last week and it was only 9 or 10C air temp then. Slightly scared about this Thursday.

all very good cookea

but if its keeping you warm in this warm weather - it wont keep you warm when its cold cold as youll be all climatised wrong ....

much like when i came back from 6 months of + 40 in equatorial guinea and was riding about in -25 wearing a down jacket , down vest and snowboarding trousers !

Full fingered gloves deployed this morning, bit soft but meant I could still type when I got to the office which is always a plus.

Now, about those thermal socks... 😀

I was in tights, a mid layer and gilet this morning. I live in the balmy South East, so must be a right pussy. 🙂

Noticeable drop in the temperature though.

Wear what you will be at a comfy temperature in. Soft shell and 3/4ers already out for social riding although sleeves are getting removed if the work rate goes up.
