I've a problem with my shimano winter boots. The fabric holding the metal d-ring that the strap passes through has torn:

any ideas, anyone? I was thinking of using some kind of thread to sew the d-ring on, there's about 4 mm of fabric that I can get at but am worried about my sewing skills and about the fabric fraying. Don't want to lose a set of goretex boots for the sake of a d-ring though!

can provide higher-res photos if anyone has better ideas and needs a close up 🙂

How about a thick piece of platsic/cloth etc to replace the loop and rivet it onto the boot in several places then just put some silicone on the inside/outside to seal it?

as a quick fix i would loop a cable tie over the start of the strap, then feed it under the sole of the shoe so the strap can loop through the other end of the cable tie if that makes sense. use a heavy duty one though!

foxy, not exactly what I had in mind, I'm trying to maintain the integrity of the goretex membrane if possible

Slowrider, that's a great quick fix thanks, will keep that one in mind

Get a new strip of strong fabric thats wide enough for the d-ring. We got some velcro from the local market the other week and they had nylon strap stuff (similar to velcro strip but without the fluff or spikes), take both to local cobler and let him sew them up.

Ours repaired my Specialized Comps when the mesh split behind the rubber/leather bits. He managed to sew them back together with some thick/strong thread. Would of thought they'd be able to sew them on top. £10 fix tops.

Massive props to CandoDavid. I sent my boot on the Monday before Christmas, he received it, fixed it and sent it back on Christmas Eve and it's back with me today. The repair is just as good as the original fixing.

In truth I could probably do something with them, but would need to see the strength of the lasting margin on the instep, a new leather patch on the instep inside and out would be ok, more pictures would be better for me
