Thinking mainly on MTB style spd shoes, what are people's thoughts on cleat positioning? Done a google search and asked a few people and there seems to be no real single rule.

Tend to find a bit of a niggle on the right knee after a long ride, having played with them I think i've got them how I like them but they're not both in the same logical position, one is about 1/3rd from the outside, one bout 1/3rd from the inside and both centred front to back.

Using them on road now as well and concerned that the longer road rides are going to make the problem worse.

I was having a bit of pain from the right knee... I was concerned it was cleat position or even something more serious. Couple of sessions with a good physio identified my muscles were slightly off centre. I can't be sure of the cause but the two prime suspects were: 1. Always sit on the sofa with one leg folded under the other. 2. I always push off on the same pedal which twists the knee slightly as I lift up on to the saddle....

Either way the physio showed me an exercise to help balance up the muscles.....

sit on a table ( or anywhere your feet dont touch the ground ) and let your legs, feet relax , they will take their natural position . should give you a good idea at which angle to fit your cleats .
