I, the fattest man in the village who needs more miles on the bike, went and got a new back wheel today, just a cheapy to see me through winter.....

......all fine and well till i tried to remove the cassette from my old wheel and it won't budge (chain whip, cassette tool and adjustable spanner). Tried everything I can think of right to the point of smacking the adjustable spanner with a hammer. Before i resort to:

Any suggestions as my knuckles can't take any more

Have you got the lock ring off, or is that the trouble?

leave the cassette on the old wheel, and shed out for a new cassette... oh and buy a chain too.... just remember to take more care over maintaining this new crappy wheel... use more grease.

Fit tyre to rim and inflate as if you were going to use it. Put lock ring tool in vice and turn wheel instead. Lots of leverage and plenty of purchase usually does the job. Cassette lock rings can be a nightmare sometimes.

you need to 'tap' the spanner (on the lockring) with a metal hammer, whilst holding the cassette still*, to make it move!! lots of gentle taps, and it'll go eventually.

*you need four hands to do this properly

Also, put the QR skewer back in the wheel to hold the locknut-remover squarely and securely in the cassette lockring, then put the lockring remover in the vice and turn the wheel.

I had the same trouble the other week, this sorted it for me ๐Ÿ™‚
