The one on my friend's kid's bike has failed, by the sound of it. The cheap singlespeed kind. Looks like you can get cheapo replacements for a fiver, but how do you remove them? Is a special tool required?

Has the old one got two wholes for a pronged tool to be placed into?

I just replaced one of these on my friends sons bike. To remove the old one i carefully cut a notch in it with the angle grinder i then inserted a screw driver into the notch and gently tapping with a hammer loosened it. Any excuse to use power tools!

It's dead easy with the correct tool. Tool in vice and unscrew.
Sometimes they are screwed on back to front (yes really) and the only way to get them off is to clamp them BASTARD tight in a vice without the tool and then unscrew. I've done this more then once. This wrecks the freewheel, but who cares?
Plenty of grease on the threads for the new one and do up hand tight. Pedalling will torque them down just perfectly. ๐Ÿ™‚
