Got an entry for next years Cape Epic and just looking into flights. Found a return flight from Manchester to Cape Town for £615 with KLM and Air France, but just phoned to ask about bike charges and been told it'll be £300 extra!!!
Flown with bikes lots before and never found anyone charging so much.
BA flights seem to be £950 and I'd have to pay their £40 each way charge on top so thats expensive too.
Has anyone flown with any other airlines to South Africa or know a cheaper way to get me and the bike there? Object to paying £300 extra for my bike....especially as I weigh less than 65kg and am pretty sure there'll be plenty of people on the plane who weigh more than that plus a bike!!
Thanks for any advice 🙂

If you're changing plane then they'll charge you for each flight, each way, so £50 / flight soon adds up....

BA used to be quite a bit cheape on that route. Have you checked South African Airways? Vigin, Iberia. Considered leaving from London instead(might give a big price difference.

On the charges its one of these things who have changed a lot recently print their fine print. Many airlines upped their or scrapped the free bikes in the last 2-3 years.

Flown to SA with both SA Airlines and Virgin quite cheaply...but never with a bike I'm afraid.

SA Airlines were really good for my bday. They upgraded me to their lounge for free and got me extremely smashed on the way there!

If you're flying from London, you're a little limited with flights to Cape Town.
British Airways still fly there daily but SAA no longer have direct flights there, you need to connect in Johannesburg. Virgin still have a Cape Town flight but I think it's a seasonal flight now rather than all year round.

I recommend not air france or a connection at Charles de gal. They just lost my luggage and apparently that is pretty common in that airport. If its unavoidable make sure you don't have a rushed time between flight as Your luggage will be delivered to your hotel up to 3days later.
