Does such a thing exist? I mean you can pick up a cheap turbo for £50 but some of the bolt through adapters for other brands cost this much! Seems little info on what is bolt through compatible on the cheaper turbos.

In my experience, unless your bolt through axle protrudes from both sides of the frame (unlikely), then a wheel on turbo trainer is not going to be a good option. Far better off biting the bullet and getting a wheel-off one which is most likely compatible out of the box. Turbos seem to be pretty cheap second hand so might be worth going that way?

Edit. For what it is worth. I actually made a special bolt through axle for my gravel bike to use on my old wheel-on turbo. Started with a very long M12 bolt. I then cut the head off it and cut a new thread that end the same as the proper axle but about a cm longer. I then added 2 nuts to the original threaded end and tightened them against each other. Using those nuts you could insert the new axle and tighten it up so that when the whole thing pulled tight there was a cm of thread poking out the drive side. Then I wound a nut onto that end so that the axle had something both sides for the turbo to clamp down onto.

I'm not adverse to a bit of cutting and welding so modification is an idea, thanks. Will keep an eye out for a second hand wheel off one too. It's a second setup that will only see occasional use so don't want to go crazy on cost.

I would disagree with the above, I’ve seen a few direct drive turbo trainers and out of the box they only have adapters for 130/135mm hub spacing.

that said, bolt through adapters are available for around £20 so there’s no reason you couldn’t buy a basic elite turbo for example and use it with that

Sounds like an excuse to buy a new bike just for the turbo !
