These cheapo trainers from sports direct have very hard solid soles, making them ideal for flat pedals. Sometime if you're cycling with trainers you can feel the pedal through the shoe, not with these. & for £13 who cares if they get messed up with mud etc. I'm on my 3rd pair now.

the shoes don't grip the pedals instead your feet end up bouncing all over the place.

never ridden 5tens have you?

They are pretty awful looking though.

They had some bike specific shoes, branded muddy fox, in the Manchester store recently. F***ing horrible looking things with a grippy looking but cheap and nasty plastic soles with 2 studs at the front. Worse than the Aldi / Crane ones for tackiness.

Edit here: http://www.sportsdirect.com/Cycling/muddyfox-mbs100-cycling-shoes-144013

2nd edit: RRP £89.99 my arse.

Can't say I've ever had any problems with bouncing feet, I have dmr V8s on my bike and the spikes grip into these shoes pretty well. It seems that a lot of specific mtb gear costs the earth but it doesn't have to.

I'd go for a pair of their cheap skate shoes, personally
