Chainstay protector...

Chainstay protector or something else…top tube hacks and bodges needed

One of the cable lugs on my Surly 1x1 catches on my shorts on almost every pedal rotation which is wearing small holes in the bottom left leg of my shorts

looking to cover it up with….something…

was thinking a chainstay protector might do the job just fine but open to any alternative suggestions

I’d rather not cut the lug off as I’m a ham fisted git and wouldn’t make a good job of it or the paint work if I’m honest

the comedy suggestion of wearing non cycling suitable (possibly denim) “short shorts” resulted in an instant “I know you and I’m not riding with you if you come out in some of those”

so….singletrack hive mind, any suggestions that might be betterer than a chainstay protector?!

Go….

Friend of mine uses mastic tape. Seems to work pretty well.

You could probably remove it with a pair of pliers just be metal fatigue if you’re not going back to cables. Then cover the smaller bump with tape. Or try some self-amalgamating tape over the lug. I’d cut if off with a very fine saw, personally.

Lugs  aren’t allowed on track bikes due to risk of injury in a crash. You can tape them over but it is generally frowned upon.

Oh and new bike +1.

Turn your saddle slightly to the left. 🙂

Just use some pliers to wobble it until it snaps off then file any sharp edges.

If you must leave it on, wrapping it in bar tape would probably do the job.

With that colour bike, only 1 option, a Borat mankini.

Clip the hose *much* closer to the lug, the extra profile/height there might then stop it snagging. The hose will lift the end of the shorts a bit.

Or drill it out and use it for routing the hose properly, that'll give you some extra height and less snagging opportunities.

Suggestion of the thread goes to  @FB-ATB this is something I could live with

although trying the cable closer to the lug with a bit of clear frame tape around it also might also be worth a shot

I had considered this but my ham fistedness doesn’t trust I won’t make a meal of the paintwork

Bar tape, also a decent suggestion I feel

beginning to wonder if the straps on a triangular frame bag might just reach over the top of the lug therefore giving something a bit practical to the situation

Thanks for the new bike suggestions but as it stands, this IS the new bike ha ha

Lump of moldable glue, e.g. Suguru or Loctite Kintsuglue

If you don't need the cable stop as an actual stop then I'd use a fine file or Dremel or similar to open it out at the closed end and make it into a cable holder. Once it has a cable or hose through it will stop being a snag risk.

Do the same with the one by the head tube for a proper job.
