[#12876201]

I'm going touring later in the summer. Currently I have a stuff sac which holds it all. Allen keys, chain tool, spanner, spare tubes, zip ties, puncture repair kit, kwik link, spare SPD cleat. A few nuts and bolts, tyre boot, etc etc.

Which works OK but the only way to find anything is to tip all the contents out. Anyone got any better ideas for storing a toolkit. Ideally in one bag/roll.

Of course ideally you go for days without needing to use anything from the kit so not a huge issue. Just wondering what anyone else does.

Days? I would be hoping to get 6 months before any of that stuff come out. That stuff always get packed to the bottom whether on daily rides or touring, and I accept that if it's needed I'll have plenty of time to unpack and pack again. Stuff like bog roll would go to the top for easy access.

I guess it depends on what you're using. If it's just a massive sack where everything gets mixed up, I could see that being annoying. If I'm touring, I'd generally be using a large saddle pack that narrows towards the bottom. There's only tools in the bottom as I hope to need those least. Everything else is packed in the order it is used. Usually sleep stuff in the saddle pack, to be removed once a day. Jacket last so I can grab it quickly on stops.

Any smaller stuff that I need more regular goes in handlebar or top tube packs.

I do keep all the tools in a plastic bag so I can pull them all out together.

Edit: I think I totally misunderstood the question tbh. I'm not that organised so I'll be no help at all.

I use the coloured elastomer wristbands that were popular a few years ago to bundle things like inner tubes, mini tool and tyre levels together - things like rattling packs can be annoying, plus it can nick and cut your inner tube. I try and keep all this stuff together E.g. bottom compartment of my frame bag, or a small top tube bag so I’m not having to empty everything else out on the floor. Rather than a tool roll, wrap everything in piece of bright coloured nylon fabric can be useful, plus it can act as emergency tyre boot material.

6 months? I forgot to mention chain oil. That's used more often than 6 months. And a couple of months is my record without a puncture.

Perhaps a separate bag for chain oil and puncture repair kit and the rest of the just in case stuff can remain at the bottom of a pannier.

I get all of my 'big trip' tools into a tool bottle that goes under the down tube, except for a second inner tube which goes in my luggage. I've even got a pump which fits in the bottle.

I was thinking day to day riding. On tour I'd expect less, although since going tubeless I've found punctures to be mostly a thing of the past. I don't miss tubes.

For chain oil though, I do keep that accessible. Partly because I use squirt and it doesn't last long, so I stuff it in one of the outside pockets on my bags where I can just grab it whenever convenient. It helps if you can get your hands on a small sample size bottle.
