Hey all, trying to keep this brief…
I’m in the process of building up a surly 1x1 from the frame up…I’m sorted for most parts but it’s time to buy crankset/chainring
I’ve got a gusset double six single speed sprocket and am scouring eBay and the like for a post-Christmas crankset purchase
Seeing a lot of 12 speed (as an example) cranksets for not much money for sale
Question…
Can I use a narrow wide chainring with my chosen sprocket or do I need to be looking for something else?!
Any advice / suggestions / recommendations greatly received
TIA
I run a Surly Pacer 1*9 without a narrow wide chainring no issues. Perhaps depends if for road or off road.
I use one of these. They come in various teeth numbers. Need a sq taper bottom bracket obviously.

Anything which doesn't have the short teeth to help front changes should work for on road.
Shouldn't be an issue as 8/9/10/11/12 speed chains have the same internal pitch & width
Some 12 speed chains have oversized rollers. 7.9mm instead of 7.7mm.
Eg SRAM flattop

Lets be honest as it only fits AXS road, you're pretty unlikely to buy one for a single speed bike.
Thanks so far all, please do excuse my idiocy as this is my first bike build so learning things as I go along,
I guess, what I’m REALLY asking, is, if I did end up with a narrow wide chainring (which necessitates a narrow wide chain) would it (chain) be compatible with a non specific (as far as I know) non narrow wide sprocket on the back? Would there be anything to watch out for re: chain and /or cassette / chain
Just in case any confusion, planning on running this as single speed and mostly (probably close to 90%) off road,
All* chains are narrow wide
*okay, half link ones aren't
You could probably pick up an old school chainset (104 bcd) very cheap, and then get one of these bargains

Steel chainrings are what you need for singlespeed. Aluminium wears out very quickly.
Note that these are for 1/8 chains rather than 3/32 but kmc 1/8 chains are only about £10 and are much tougher.
@simondbarnes @anono duly noted, gents, thankyou
In hindsight I MAY have got myself twisted with the difference between narrow wide, 1/8 and 3/32 sized chains
From what I can pull from all responses so far…I think…
It doesn’t actually matter at all?!
Just double checked and the spec sheet says the gusset sprocket is good for
narrow 5/64" (9 speed) chains
so it would seem, any steel chainring and a decent 9 speed chain should see me right??
Just to but in.
I can recommend these folk for stainless chainrings if you need them. I use them and they are fairly local to me.
