Recently changed the chain and cassette on my road bike. Its the same range 11-25 (I think). Its a cheapo 9spd sunrace cassette and a 9spd SRAM chain.
When putting some pressure on the pedals or just standing up to pedal and in the smallest sprocket, it tries to change up / skips a bit. Doesn't make any difference which chainring at the front.
Its fine on the work stand, shifts up and down fine, but actually pedalling hard and it keeps trying to shift.
Could it be a poorly made cassette?
Any ideas?
Sounds like you just need to loosen off the derailleur limit screw by 1/2 turn....?
Presuming all limit screws are set ok - then:
Might be worth checking the clearence between the edge off the cassette lockring + the chain's quicklink when in the 11 sprocket - could be just touching + pushing the chain up. May not be this but may be worth elimninating.
I presume you are using an SRAM joining link? (anyway up is ok for them).
If you are using a Connex link is it the right way up? - they can be put on upside down + cause this sort of jumping on every chain revolution in the 11 sprocket.
Wrong size cassette lockring may be one from an 12 through cassette?
Mech hanger straight?
Rear mech straight?
Thanks guys...
SRAM link used, with lock ring that came with the cassette.
Thought I'd backed off the limit screw but will check again, along with the lockring clearance.
Mech hanger and rear mech should be straight cos I haven't crashed it or dropped it. I've checked the hanger isn't loose.
new cassette with a worn chain is your problem, always replace together
He said he replaced the chain at the start of the thread,so I'd assume with a new chain.
Is the new bottom sprocket the same size as the original? It may be that the original was 11t and the new one is 12t so the rear mech is now too close/ touching causing it to skip.
You can adjust the screw at the rear of the mech by the mech hanger to adjust how close the mech sits to the cassette.
is the smallest sprocket.or the next, on the right way round? they have ramps on the outer edges making the sprockets directional..
Yep,
Recently changed the chain and cassette on my road bike.
It doesn't skip on any other sprockets, just the bottom one as though its trying to change up.
I didn't think you could put the last sprocket on the wrong way round cos otherwise there's no space between it and the next sprocket?
Never checked the bottom sprocket was the same size before I binned the old one. I know the screw you mean, is it trial and error or should I be trying to get the mech closer / away from the sprockets?
Haven't had time to check it out yet, the bb on my mtb is seized and also the chain is worn according to the chain checker ๐
I had exactly the same problem not long ago but mine was after all new running gear. Spent ages messing around with limit screws, gear cables, chain line, in the end it turned out to be the quick link in my mavic (yes mavic the wheel people) chain. Turned it around and 'bingo' problem solved.
Recently had to bin a brand new Sunrace cassette as it was slipping in quite a few of the gears(whole drivetrain was new), new Shimano cassette fitted and all was fine.
