are they as smart as i imagine?
and compared to Inline air?
as i would've imagined having just converted my not very high end forks to coil. night and day already.
mind you CC is already night and day with other shocks from what i can tell.
what frame is that poah?
transition suppressor
Watching.
Does anyone know how they compare weight wise with a similar size non-inline CCDB air and coil ?
my 216x63 unit it 295g including the hardware, spring depends on weight. my 400lbx2.5 is ~500g, while a light weight one is ~360g. my monarch plus was 410g (incl hardware)
Weight difference is less than a moderately sized poo.
I'm really tempted and in fact the DBCoil IL is steering me towards an Orange 5, whereas the Four might be more suited to my riding. Transition Scout is another option but demo bikes are like hens teeth!
Poah- do you find the coil lacks a bit of 'pop' compared with an air can? I like my bike to feel lively, rather than squidgy
I've got no idea what pop is tbh lol I don't like fast rebound so it's tuned to my liking. If you want faster rebound there is plenty of adjustment.
I've gone from last years Five to a Scout, IL coil swapped over from one to the other. It made the Five feel loads better, quieter too. Still getting used to the Scout and setting it up but feels a lot smoother and quicker to turn.
Strangey13- I'd be really interested in how you find the Scout compared with the Five, and also what difference you found the coil IL made to both
RicB, I found exactly that with my Scout. I've got a Float X and an Push MX tuned Van RC coil and whilst the coil has more grip and is more sensitive it doesn't bounce and pop off things so much, makes it faster but less fun. Can't speak for that lovely looking inline though.
Hmm I figured that might be the case. 4rse. I guess adjusting lsc and lsr might help with that but I wonder if a DB Air IL or Float X might be better.
I'm not a racer so not remotely bothered about times; I just want to have as much fun as I can on the bike each ride and popping off 1-2 foot kickers is one of those enjoyable things.
Other option is to get the basic shock and have it custom tuned/avalanched.
#procrastination!
It made a big difference to the Five over the Monarch it came with. I was running quite high pressures and played about a lot with reducers but always felt quite harsh when pedalling on singletrack/trail centre stuff. The CC obviously has a lot more adjustment for this but I never changed it from how TF sent it to be honest it just felt really good from the off. Changed to the Scout as everything including the shock swapped straight over. Feels a lot easier to get over the front on the Scout and easier to push about, or slip and slide around everywhere as it was today. All I've done so far to the CC is put a softer spring on, 550 on the Five to 450 on the Scout. Will play about a bit when it's not so wet. Not tried the Scout with an air shock yet but am not really bothered to be honest, have no trouble jumping off things other than my inability to jump very well but definitely feel I have more confidence with the coil. I enjoyed the Five and rode a lot on it but am enjoying the Scout more so far.

Does it fit on a 2014-16 Trance?
have you tried their fit finder?
Watching this with interest. Top of my short list right now us an Airdrop Edit which has the DBcoil IL as an option. I'm not a fan of the balance port "lump" that seems inherent on all large volume air shocks.
Tempted by one of these myself. For those looking for a 'poppy feel' I was talking to TF Tuned and they said they can shim the Ohlins ttx to provide more of that feel. You can also fit the cane creek valt spring instead of the ohlins in your face yellow one.
I like the idea of coil, bored of having constant issues with air cans.

More of a press release than a review!

Cane Creek...A by word for reliability
True.....but at least CC have openly admitted the DBInline had problems, and tried to sort it. Contrast that with the likes of Evil (what crack) and Bos (yes of course we'll have spares available). RS have had loads of problems with Reverbs and some creaking csu niggle with the Pike so it's not like CC are the only bike co with a history of reliability problems
They seem to be holding their hands up to previous issues and every suspension manufacturer seems to have dropped the ball at some point. Remember rockshox bushings corriding onto the stanchions?
Yeah, I know, I'm looking at these as well. It's just there are brands that make my teeth itch when it comes to reliability...Crank Bros, Cane Creek...I know other brands have problems, but Rockshoxs don't have a "name" for it, know what I mean?
Just to chip in with my experience - I have one on an airdrop edit frame and love it.
For the springs though, they are a bit tight on the free length (for the correct 2.25inch stroke i need for my shock). I ended up using a superalloyracing "enduro" spring where the free length is significantly shorter than cane creeks standard/valt springs.
They are also available in 25lb increments:

I'm no way linked to the company but after i had to compress my shock whilst on the bike and use loads of strong zipties to enable removal. The SAR spring is a godsent!
I must say, I have had one eye on one of these shocks for a while now. I used to love my old CC coil shock, but its weight and lack of pedal function limited it for my type of riding. I would be fitting it to my new Orange Five, so would love to hear experiences from anyone thats fitted one. Especially the climb switch.
and that will be me not getting a Cane Creek shock...Great product control, good to see they've overcome all their issues...etc etc...
😆
there isn't any issue - you just have to compress the spring to get it out, its pretty simple to do. I'm assuming its because it lacks the reservoir so space is tight. you can either get someone to sit on the bike or just apply preload. getting the spring in is a lot easier.
I agree, not really an issue unless you want to change springs mid ride
SAR springs look good. Wasn't there one brand that were only lasting a year of hard riding? Which were those? I like light weight, but I prefer durability.
aye, fairynuff. Still doesn't strike me as a great advert for the product but I guess if you're not changing the spring, it's not the end of the world.
the light steel ones are not as durable as standard steel ones
but Rockshoxs don't have a "name" for it, know what I mean?
They ought to.
How less durable are they? I've never broken a coil on a bike. Should I expect to?

They ought to.
Once upon a time, they did have. It was basically Fox price increases that let rockshox back in the room.
They ought to.
just conformation bias and numbers of units isn't it though?
Not had any trouble changing springs on the 190 length shock. Plenty of space once the top nut is backed off.
What's the 200x57 like for this overly long spring issue?
just conformation bias and numbers of units isn't it though?
Perhaps. I know a lot of riders who will tell you how good Sram's warranty is, the fact that Shimano's is good too is relatively unknown.
It'd be an interesting survey: How many times have you used Sram's warranty and how many times have used any other bike component's warranty?
onzadog - my CCDB IL coil is the 200x57. To fit the 550lb official cane creek spring (approx 127mm free length) was doable by hand because of the angle you slip the retainer plate on at. THere is quite a large overlap of the retainer plate on the inside of the spring. With the spring collar wound fully off there was about 2mm free movement of the spring which isnt enough to get the retainer off. Hence compressing and zip-tying the spring to shorten the free length.
My SAR spring is 116mm including the POM spacers making it possible to remove the spring by just backing off the collar.
Cheers.
one of my friends has one on his intense tracer palmer edition...awesome shock and i suspect fitting a custom titanium coil will make it even better
i suspect fitting a custom titanium coil will make it even better
only lighter
Would there be any difference in riding performance between the 150 mm db coil il (on airdrop edit) and rct3 deluxe 145 mm (on bird aeris). Just curious what the difference would be and if you can really notice it.
Other than they are different bikes you mean?
Better is subjective - for me the IL coil is better than the monarch plus on my suppressor, for my weight, riding style and trail usage.
The option to fit a coil shock is certainly a tick in the plus column for me. I'm not sure if that option exists on the bird.
