Switching from the SRAM PG950 to an Shimano XT770.
I noticed the blurb for the 770 said "[i]For Super Narrow 9-speed HG chains[/i]" - is this optional? or should I/do I have to slap a fresh chain on this as well? (bearing in mind I fitted a new chain last week).

Ignore the marketing blurb.
Stick with SRAM or KMC - they're much easier to fit and remove than Shimano and work fine on Shimano cassettes.

always used sram and kmc chains with shimano cassette
currently PC991 chain with XT cassette - no problems at all
