Pete and his family are some of the nicest people I know. Can anyone suggest anything useful that we could do to try to locate the bikes and van?
that really sucks & can't help with getting it back unfortunately but if he does - and anyone else with a Transit - I really urge you to change the drivers door lock for a security one as the stock lock is pathetically easy to defeat!
something like this is cheap enough & easy to fit yourself. Also consider deadlocks for the side & rear.

Even if they are most(?) policies I'm aware of explicitly exclude theft from cars (and vans I guess). Can any of us honestly say we haven't thought 'it'll be alright' from time to time?
Is it really wise to put the van registration on public web ?
If (unlikely) they get the van back it’s just been advertised that the van probably has nice new bikes inside it

With regards to bikes in vans and insurance I've paid the extra £25 to cover mine (on the van policy) worth checking if your insurance does the same if they aren't on it as standard (Adrian Flux, camper van policy)
No suggestions on what you can do other than ask people to keep an eye out, which i'll do.

I've got a 14 plate custom. I'm really paranoid about it being nicked, as they're notoriously easy. Every time i get out, I've got a steering lock, and clutch/brake pedal lock that goes on.
The steering lock won't stop them, but making it look like a harder target than something else in the car park/street has so far been enough.
I know it doesn't help your mate out, fingers crossed it's recovered, or his insurance at least play ball.
I'd set up alters on ebay etc for the bikes and parts, you never know, they might pop up.
An AirTag hidden in the van makes a huge amount of sense.
If they post on any Facebook Groups or Stolen Bikes pages, tell them to be aware of scammers directing them to Instagram accounts for people who are "experts" in tracking and recovering stolen goods. It's an obvious scam, but when people are feeling desperate to get their stuff back they're not always thinking clearly.
Gutted for them anyway, it's a horrible feeling.
OP here. The van is insured of course. I'm uncertain about the bikes though. I once had a claim refused because the bike locked up inside the car was not locked to "a fully immovable object".

You don’t have to be wealthy or rich to own an MTB and a van, especially if the van is either your work van or daily runner.
People who steal vans and bikes are criminals not modern day Robin Hoods.
