Carbon fork bung/expander - long/grippy

Eldest has enthusiastically tightened his loose headset on the road bike and pulled the steerer bung a bit.ย

I've reset it BUT I don't think it's gripping especially well.ย  I suspect it's just "polished" the inside of the steerer when it slipped.ย ย

I'd like to put in a longer / especially grippy one that might get below the existing one (about 40-50mm).ย ย

Has anyone found any especially reliable ones?ย ย

Deda Elementi is available at 70mm but even a touch longer would be good.ย  1 1/8 steerer.ย

Thanks

I changed the one in my Digger. It was about 30mm I think. I got one on ebay that was 50mm for a fiver. It's been solid for the last 2 years.ย

I've just checked and they do 80mm also. There seem to be lots of sellers selling them.

Carbon grip paste will also help.

Yes, assuming carbon steerer, you need something that reaches below the stem to support the steerer, typically 40-50mm.

Choose something that expands over its whole length, again for support, rather than just the bottom third.

Some lightweight ones keep the expansion part small, but unless the remaining two-thirds is a snug fit in the tube it won't provide support.

The Deda Elementi Expander 45 fits the bill IMHOย

Brilliant thanks both.ย  ย

I found a 70mm version of the Deda one on Amazon.ย  I'm aiming to have a bit of grip below where the existing one slipped from and plenty of carbon grip paste stuff.ย ย

Hopefully that'll sort it.ย  👍

Don't overtighten it, the bung can expand the steerer (it's a problem if it's excessive). Some manufacturers can over specify; Deda recommend 3Nm

Drop a spacer on and gradually tighten the bung to single figure Nm; you'll feel when the steerer is expanding by sliding the spacer up and down as you go

@timba

Thanks for the tip.ย

I've not got a torque wrench (I should treat myself really - cue a what torque wrench thread 😂) but it's a good thickish walled tube on his Felt. I did leave the stem in place while fitting and no additional friction in the bars flopping around once fitted.ย ย

This model (maybe as it's a longer version) seems to be maximum of 5Nm.ย  If I'm over it's not by much so I'll quickly check it with a spacer now and then get myself a torque wrenchย  (should have done ages ago) and check on it more precisely later in the week.ย ย
