this is the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions the megane: http://www.meganeownersclub.co.uk/changingmeganebulb.php

I wonder how many other simple things they have messed up.

A hoot to drive, badly designed and poorly manufactured.

Mates have CTR's, GTi & the Renault Sport Meganne, if say the Renault is the most fun but its far behind in terms of build. If you lease then it may not concern you as much in the long run.

They're ace! Try avoid the 225, the 230 r26 or the new shape ones are the ones to go for! Or the R 26.R if you feel the need for no back seats and plastic windows!! Things like headlight bulbs are a nightmare to change as the link. My clio 197 isn't as bad, just need the hands of an 8yr old pikey. Electrics can be a interesting, like opening the boot on the clio can result in one mirror folding in but you will forget all that on some interesting B roads!

My workmate bought a brand new Megane thing two months ago. Three weeks into his ownership the gearbox imploded. Like, actually into little bits. Seems that Jean-Pierre was too busy thinking about which deodorant not to buy and forgot to screw the gearbox oil plug in.
He got it back two weeks ago, and now the tyre pressure sensors are duff and telling him that various tyres are flat.
Obviously we remind him every day that we told him before he bought it that French cars are merde.

I've always been impressed by the capability of the Renault business to produce fairly radical sports specials.

Thinking of :
Renault Alpine
Renault 5 Maxi
Clio Williams
Clio V6

All ace!
Though my missus has a more modest Megane 1.6 ... Usually minor electrical maladies every now and then (rear windows don't open) but the chassis dynamics are great.

Flying Ox ... tyre pressure sensors possibly not duff but will register interesting readings on the recent cold morning spells (sub zero will influence the pressure).

Depends what your definition of fun is.

If you want some thing that puts a proper smile on your face go rwd.

F1 edition is the cup chassis and quite a few optional extras as standard, things like the recaro seats. I think they have xenon headlights as standard too.

The cup models are normally pretty spartan inside, less toys, no air con and things like no electric mirrors to keep the weight down. It comes with stiffer and lower suspension though. F1 editions have the aircon, electric extras and the cup chasis and what I mentioned above

If you look at a megane that age, make sure the timing belt has been done. If its nearly due when you buy it, make sure you're sitting down when they tell you the cost!

I'm not a Renault fan... but this is on a par with my 3 series, the exception being you can just about get the inner arch flap open with the wheel on full lock rather than taking the wheel off (just as well as BM don't give you a jack)

Civic Type-R, various Golf's & VAGs, GT-86 if you want a proper car.

There's enough room in the back for some shopping in the R26R. Worth a look.

Got a Megane 225 with a cup chassis and (we think) the 250 engine so got the performance and handling but still got the little comforts.

Actually been pretty reliable in the 2 1/2 years we've had it. Couple of little issues but nothing major. Remember the Renault Sport variants are still (I think) built in a different factory to the standard models.

Best handling, most fun car I've driven since my teenage Mini owning years.

Surely the megane 225 has the 225bhp engine? Which is the large rear end megane? The first of the current shape megane sports was 250bhp, later bumped upto 265bhp on the trophy?

had the 225, orange, or tangerine dream!!

Well when i say dream, 1800 quid for 4 new discs and pads after doing only 1500 miles in a year in it, although a swift call to renault brough ti down to 700.

Electrics were all fine, tyre sensors were generally good, now and again played up. Gearbox was designed by a 5 year old with lego. Alot of play ( compared to the magical CTR). Interior was well specc'd, good build quality ( nothing fell apart). Looked pretty awesome as well.

Performance was good, 150mph car and hits 130 with ease. B roads were its forte, had massive grip and brilliant cornering ability. Acceleration was brill, held against my mates bluefinn'd 275bhp focus ST ( although the focus trounced everything with in gear low rev's torque). Sterring was pretty good and felt safe in the wet, although horrendous in the snow. Fuel was about 30mpg. Seats were too high though, typical renault issue and now there dirt cheap. 225 had 222bhp, 230 had 227bhp, same torque. Go for trophy or f1 if you can though

final thought, have a good test drive. I'm glad i got rid of mine when i did, the engine sounded like a bag of bolts were rattling in it, to the point when i traded it in , the 25 miles to the garage on the motorway i avoided the using the turbo just in case it blew

i have owned a fair few sports cars in my time , ive curently got a 325 beemer
the megane cup sport i had for 3 years, was without doubt the best handling car i have ever had, it was fantastic fun to drive, it was the previous model to the curent one, got around 26 mpg
i had it from new, and didnt have a single fault with it, and i drove it hard.
i would have one again in a flash, fantastic car,

in other news it took me 3 minutes to replace the headlamp bulb on mine today.

turn wheel, open inspection hole, pop bonnet for more light and replace bulb.

I know people who take the wheel off and drop bumpers etc no need!

To the people saying the gearbox is crap, take it up with Nissan; it's one of theirs.

Japanese engineering eh! ๐Ÿ™„

I've had a fair few cars BMWs, Impreza, CTR, Mini's, TTs, Boxster S.

Only car I ever regret getting rid of is my Mk 5 Golf GTI.

My experience of Renault Sports has always been really positive, as has my experience of the many Renaults that have been in the family due to have a friend working for them and getting cracking discounts.

As has been pointed out, they are built in a different factory in Dieppe and generally seem a bit better built...although the interior is still made of cheese. They spent all of their time and money on a sorted chassis.

The early Megane Renault Sports are a bit poo though, they are too soft with poor steering. The later ones are ace though...not much will keep up with them on a good B road. One of the car mags used one as a chase car for a feature on super cars and it held its own on the welsh roads.

The later ones are supposed to be even better, although the engine is bland in comparison to the Focus ST which makes a lovely noise but drinks fuel.

All cars have their issues and people love to jump on the French cars are rubbish bandwagon. My BMW had a fair few issues...a lot of well known ones too.

I had a Clio 16V (the one below the Williams), thrashed the living daylights out of it for 7 years, bit of a handful in the wet though. Numerous problems with it including a constant drain on the battery that couldn't be found.

I didn't even haggle when i px-ed it, I just wanted to see the back of it
