How rough is Cannock these days? I did FoD verderers on a 26" HT the other day and it was pretty rough and rocky. Are both the Cannock trails still the same?
I think you'll be fine but then i think your definition of rocky might be different to mine
I've ridden Cannock on a rigid. I didn't die.
Regularly ride Cannock on a Cotic BFe, for the most part I wouldn't describe much of it as rough.
You poor soul, James. Beware of the braking mountains at Cannock.
If you ride Cannock on a FS rig you're a girl! ๐
Soz I've had a drink ๐
You'll need at least 160mm of travel and full body armour.
if the verderers trail was rough you will defo need full suss at cannock although thousands manage on hardtail and rigid bikes and love it.
The braking bumps on monkey dog are rougher than anything on verderers.

Don't forget to push your bike up cardiac hill whilst being overtaken by single speed hardtail riders, in their fifties, who had been racing the day before, and severely hung over after emptying the beer tent at the camp site ๐ (not that I saw this taking place, you understand)

FFS we are ****in doomed. Ride your bike. If it's too bumpy go slower or pick your route with more care but just ride and don't worry about the bike.
Was at Chicksands the other day for the first time in 5 years (if not longer). Good bike park that is well run by Steve. Was chatting to one of the lads riding who looked suprised when I said I was going to ride round the woods. I remember when it was just riding on natural stuff not fabricated trail parks. I think freestyling the woods is the way to go on whatever you have
I'd be surprised if any trail centre trail in the UK wasn't rideable on a hardtail as long as you've got the skills.
Most are doable even if you haven't. I have regularly ridden both the Dog & the Monkey at Cannock with folks on HT's and even done it on one myself a few times.
I find the likes of llandegla, gisburn and cannock much more enjoyable on a hardtail. I have both a hardtail and fs and prefer each for different types of rides.
Cannock is smoother than verderers, & less rooty than free mincers
what about the nasty pebbles ๐
I don't get why people have to be horribly aggressive on here. The lad's just asking a question. I've only ever done Cannock on a hardtail, you'll be fine but you might struggle on the blacks over on the monkey. Have fun! ๐

Really ?
More lighthearted p taking than aggression .
When I used to go with a friend, it took at least three trips round FTD+Monkey to shake his Decathlon special to pieces.
Ridden it on a fully rigid singlespeed, good news is I'm not posting from beyond the grave ๐
Was there last weekend on the singlespeed. Managed to clean everything including the black sections. It's fine.
Which trail can't you ride on a hardtail?
You'll probably enjoy it more on a hard tail.
I went there for the first time last Monday and came across a fat brummie lad screaming for his friends to come back and help him.
I thought he'd broken a bone or something. No, he'd just shaken the rear mech of his brand new Carrera into his rear wheel and tore it off.
Some of us can remember riding mountain bikes, when you didn't have the choice. It was just going out on the mountain bike, no choice of 'the right protection' or choice of suspension, or come to think of it, wheel size.
I've taken my '97 Kona Lava Dome down Jacobs Ladder and the Beast, so I think you'll cope at Cannock. That said, I'd probably take my Enduro to Cannock, as I did last time I went, but purely because it's the bike I generally prefer riding anywhere.

I still don't.
I'm one of the best riders in my group, and have ridden llangdegla black and reds without and problems. Embarassingly, I had to walk a couple of sections at Cannock, I wish I'd taken my full sus, or gone down a day earlier to scope out the lines before riding with my group.
The Artist......I broke my leg on a fully rigid Spesh Stumpy before the bloke I was talking to at Chicksands was born..... ๐ฏ
It's fine on a hard tail, its fine on a full suss! I've gone OTB on both on that bloody tree stump on the monkey trail.
I have seen people ride it on a cross bike. I ride it on my full sus I know my HT is faster.
Cannock? Might be prudent to think WWHD.
You must have been very bored, old pal.
Cannock can be riden on anything really. Used to love the climbs on my 100mm hardtail, but now generally take my 130mm full suser just because it's my preferred bike. There isn't as far as I've seen on the monkey or the dog anything that means you must have a specific type of bike. Most important thing for me is getting your tyre pressures right as the stones are very slippery when wet as they are so smooth but the rest tends to roll pretty well.
OP. Hard tail fine. Rgid fine. Full suspension fine. Ride what you've got and you will have a great time.
Just don't ride a rigid SS fixie and you'll be OK. I started a STW ride with SingleSpeedPunk circa 2005, and he's probably still there now.
Anyone know what the snow is like there today?
It's not too bad on the trails themselves, still a bit around off piste.
Is there much ice on the trails?
As said above it's a non-question, Cannock on a hardtail is absolutely fine. I have a BFe and before I got my 'big' 160mm FS in August I rode it everywhere (didn't have a choice) - the local woods, Sherwood, Cannock, Whinlatter, CyB, The Peaks, The Lakes, Antur, Laggan, Nevis (uplift red), etc. Didn't die, might not have been the fastest on some of those trails but had loads of fun.
It's fine on a hardtail but better on a full sus. I feel the same about pretty much every trail that isn't completely flat and smooth though.
But you do need a full face helmet and body armour......
Cannock is fine on a ht, in fact I think I have more fun but that's because I tend to hit sections as fast as I do on my fs. The fs is more comfortable and hurts less.
When I was there in the summer I saw a couple of guys on unicycles.
I honestly can't think of anywhere that isn't rideable on a hardtail.
MTFU and learn to ride. You tart.
As Bullroar asked is there snow / ice ? as couple of us was heading up Monday if ice free .
I actually prefer a HT at Cannock, but mine have been a Soul and a Ti frame so pretty comfy no matter what. My first experience on an Orange Crush did leave me sore for a couple of days though...but I hated that bike!
For the most part the trails were ice free today. There were a couple of places where it was a bit slippy but they were obvious to spot; notably on the lower part of lower cliff and some of the drops on the final section back to the car park.
The puddles on the Cliffs were deep and cold ๐
All round a good ride on a 1*10 BFe with minimal body armour.
Saw a woman ride a shopping bike complete with a shopping basket on the front down Lower Cliff once...takes all sorts. Nobody died, just go try it yourself.
