Have a Sram X9 rear mech that I want to use on a triple set up.
Am I asking for trouble?
Should I just sell it and buy a long cage?

In short - Yes.
Many bikes (Like my Pitch) are supplied set up like this.

probably - med cage X9 has a 37T capacity so if you add the diffence between your largest and smallest chain wheel and largest and smallest sprocket and it comes to 37 or less then it will be fine. Even if it's a couple over I would imagine it would be ok as long as you avoided the extreme gears
