Having used an 8speed mech with a nine speed in the past I would have thought it would be ok?
Drive train.
Sorry, not usually a pedant but that really does my head in.
Oh, and no I don't think you can.
ok then, 10 speed cranks, shifters, chain and rear mech.... ๐
Really, it wont work?
Yeah just squish the sides of the cage in with some mole grips unless its some pro as funk campag carbon job.
the difference in width is 0.2mm (don't quote me) between 9 & 10 speed.
I just put a 9 speed chainset a 9 speed front mech with 10 speed cassette, rear mech and chain.
It works.
Cant see why a 9 speed mech wouldnt work with a 10 speed chain and chainset
Yes it will work fine. I have been running that setup with no problems
Yes, we are running it like that on the girls bikes.
I've been using a 9 speed Shimano front mech with my X9 2x10 set up for the last few months with no problems at all, so you should be OK.
don't how well it'd work for 3x10 though.
Great thanks for replies.
You can also use a 9 speed chainset with a 10 speed chain....?

Aye, inner width is the same. Various people, manufacturers mostly, do say it won't shift as well but I can't tell any difference (WMB did a crank test and their favourite shifting 10-speed setup used a 9-speed crank)
Ah, thought you talking about 9speed shifter/10 speed mech type stuff.

*Checks again after 50 miles on the bike*
Yes apparently you can ๐
BTW I use an XT 44/32/22/ currently on offer at Merlin.
Cassette is an Ultegra 12-30 which gives some really superb gear ratios
Ok cheers again.
I'll try using the 9 speed cranks and front mech and see how I go.
Just need to decide which 10 speed chain to use now.....
KMC X10
Ordered a KMC x93 in the end cheers.
Running 3x10, 9 speed front mech. 23/33/44 with 11-36 cassette. I run non-indexed shifter for front mech as I hate chain scrub on the mech.
